Le Marché St. George (Riley Park)
I have an obsession with little corner stores, and particularly those that are embedded within the actual neighbourhood. You may have read about my trip to the Cardero Grocery, Cardero Bottega, the Charles Store at Carolina and 12th Avenue corner store and other little stores within the actual neighbourhood. I am fascinated with the economic geography of Mom-and-Pop stores within a neighbourhood.
Le Marché St. George is more closely aligned with that house on 18th Avenue and Columbia Street where there was a little community market. And that’s what drew me to it. Le Marché St. George doesn’t promote itself very much anywhere online, and yet it does enjoy a high reputation.
We are a neighbourhood grocery store and cafe. We specialize in artisan products that are local and selected treasures from around the world
I took my Mom there for a coffee and a chocolate pastry. Admittedly the price of the chocolate croissant was pretty steep compared to other places, but the staff were really nice. The coffee was very tasty and the ambiance resembled a Montmartre Café circa the mid-1990s. Le Marché St. George is located at 4393 St. George at the corner of 28th, and it’s open Mon to Fri 8-6, Saturday 9-6, Sunday 9-5.
