‘London’ and ‘Turbo’ from VPD Mounted Squad visit London Drugs on the anniversary of the 2011 Vancouver riots

I love “feel good” stories, and while I wasn’t able to be there, I learned from London Drugs that their store on Georgia and Granville (which had been ravaged during the 2011 Vancouver riots) had a little visit from the Vancouver Police Department Mounted Squad this past June 15th, 2012.

‘London’ and ‘Turbo,’ donated to the Vancouver Police Department through support from London Drugs will be visiting staff for the first time on the one year anniversary of the Stanley Cup riot. A decision was made to donate these two horses because of the significant role the mounted squad members played in quelling the riot on June 15th. In an earlier private ceremony, London Drugs’ president and CEO Wynne Powell presented the staff at Granville and Georgia with a family-values appreciation plaque that will also be available for photograph. This plaque was given to the staff in recognition of their courage and continued dedication following the June 15th, 2011 riot.

I know that June of 2011 was a dark month in the lives of Vancouverites and I’m glad to always hear that there are positive elements to such negative events. I hope these riots never, ever happen again. I was in the downtown core when everything went down and I felt the tension throughout the night. But with stories like these, I always feel hope for our city.
