Greek Day Vancouver 2012 (June 24th)

There is so much to do in Vancouver, and so little time! But there’s always one event I have always had a soft spot in my heart for: Greek Day Vancouver, which is now in its 2012 edition (I think the last time I covered it in person was 2010, but I have written about it for years). I am specially fond of Greek Day Vancouver not only because I have several close friends of Greek heritage, but also because I lived in Kitsilano for many years. Kitsilano used to be the ethnic enclave of Greeks in Vancouver.

The objective of our project is to increase cultural awareness and communication of Vancouver’s multifaceted society through the Hellenic Canadian Congress of B.C.’s (HCC) activities during the celebration of the 125th Anniversary of the City and to emphasize it as the best liveable city in the world. The HCC’s Greek Heritage Festival project would do this by promoting the Vancouver Greek community’s established presence during the last 100 years and incorporating its rich cultural heritage spanning 2500 years of history. The project will encourage public inter-cultural and inter-racial understanding, personal enjoyment and harmony. The activities will concentrate mostly in the realm of art, history, crafts, dance, music, mythology, presentations/lectures, literature and learning about the social and cultural contributions the Greek community has made to the City of Vancouver.
