International Day Against Homophobia 2012

The theme for this year’s International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) is Sexual Diversity in the Workplace. One of the most open spaces that I know for sexual diversity, and one that has been really instrumental in the development of queer students, staff and faculty is UBC (my alma mater and the university where I teach right now) and their initiative Positive Space. UBC is one of the workplaces where I think queer faculty, students and staff can feel most at home because for UBC it is really important to have sexual diversity in the workplace, and their commitment to Positive Space is definitely relevant.

This morning, May 17th, there will be a breakfast organized by Qmunity and Vancity (unfortunately I’m going to have to miss it) to celebrate International Day Against Homophobia. Canada is an extremely progressive country when it comes to queer rights and I hope it continues this way. Mexico is slowly but surely improving in that field.

The International Day Against Homophobia, held on May 17 every year, is a rallying event offering an opportunity for people to get together and reach out to one another. Fondation Émergence promotes, mainly on a pan-Canadian level, the International Day Against Homophobia and encourages organisations and individuals to highlight this event in their environment
