Dia de Reyes (Epiphany)

When I was a child, I would patiently wait for the Dia de Reyes (Day of the Kings, or Epiphany) when you know, Melchor, Gaspar and Balthazar would come and drop gifts for all children. You’ll see… neither in Mexico nor in Spain you expect Santa Claus to bring you gifts, you wait until January 6th when the Kings will bring all sorts of goodies to you (as the Christian story says, the Kings arrived on horse, camel and elephant, bringing respectively gold, frankincense and myrrh to the baby Jesus.

Well, that’s what the story says…

In Mexico, it’s traditional to eat King’s Cake (Rosca de Reyes), and I know of two people who make it. One of them is Rossana Ascencio (@MiMetate on Twitter) and the other is Pamola Bakery in River Market in New Westminster. This cake is delicious and normally I would have hosted a party to eat Rosca de Reyes, but I’m really not in the mood. But that’s something we’d do in Mexico.
