The Seminar at the Vancouver International Fringe Festival 2011 (review)

I love the Vancouver International Fringe Festival (or “The Fringe” for short) because you never know what to expect, and the plays are constantly weirder and more extravagant. The Seminar is no exception. The play includes a freakishly choreographed chant “Choose to Change,” a plethora of insults hurled at the audience, multimedia, and a surgery. The 3(ish) characters, plus assorted audience members, fill the stage with games, dances, and presentations. The idea of marketing a life-changing full-body makeover surgery is marketed to an audience of guinea pigs. The characters are freakish, but somehow endearing and hilarious.

People who you should take to see this performance:

-Lovers of TV shows like The Swan or Extreme Makeover
-People who can take a beating to their self-esteem
-People who love to make fun of the beauty industry

People who should not see this performance:

-Anyone who is pro-cosmetic surgery
-Anyone who is ultra sensitive / can’t take a joking insult
-Anyone who take their looks, weight, beauty, etc. very seriously and idolize models or pop stars
-Anyone who is squeamish at the sight of blood and/or surgeries

I totally enjoyed my time at this show and I would recommend it! It’s tour is coming to a close, so hurry if you still want to see it!
