The Hungry Oven

I learned to cook from my Mom, and for obvious reasons, my first recipe was enchiladas. Cooking school is one of those things that I wish I had tried more, simply because of how accessible it is to attend a cooking class in Vancouver (have you heard of The Dirty Apron, for example?). At one point I thought of doing a cooking class when I was younger simply because my chemical engineering undergraduate minor is in Food Science and Technology. Lucky for Vancouver parents, there is now The Hungry Oven, which offers cooking classes for children.

Have your kids been bitten by the boredom bug? The summer holidays are here, and The Hungry Oven® has your solution. The child-focused and kid-friendly culinary school in North Vancouver is offering summer camps for kids aged 4 to 16 years old. Day or weeklong sessions are focused not only on cooking, but teaching kitchen safety and healthy eating habits in a fun and fully-supervised environment. The state-of-the-art facility is purpose-built with a home-style kitchen for the youngest students and two commercially equipped kitchens for older students.

The Hungry Oven® is one-of-a-kind in Canada, and specializes in teaching children and young adults to cook and bake. Their goal is to instill a lifelong passion for cooking healthy and delicious meals from scratch with fresh local ingredients. Each summer camp class is taught by a professionally trained The Hungry Oven® Chef instructor, and begins with a safety review and discussion and demonstration of the day’s recipes. After a hands-on class, every participant gets to plate their freshly made creation, and eat it with their fellow classmates in the eat-in Junior Kitchen or separate dining room. There is even a viewing area for parents where they can see their kids in action on ‘live’ TV screens.

The Hungry Oven® summer camp classes are all about fun in the kitchen, friendship, and learning new skills under the direction of fully trained and safety-minded chefs. It’s not just about learning the ins and outs of the kitchen, but helping to enhance social skills, teamwork and develop a sense of self-confidence. The Hungry Oven® truly believes that…. one bite can rock your world!

For more information or to book your space at a Hungry Oven® summer camp, call 604-924-CHEF (2433) or visit The Hungry Oven website. I have 1 space at a week-long summer camp available to give away on my site to one lucky reader (value is $575, but non-redeemable of course for cash!). While I suggest the week of July 23-27th, you can use it for any of the weeks that the camp goes for (check schedule here). You can enter my contest in any of the following four ways (and if you do all four, you have a total of 4 entries):

1) Drop a comment on this blog with a description of your favorite recipe (you don’t need to type it in its entirety, but you can share a little bit of a teaser).

2) Post a tweet with the following content:

Shared my favorite recipe with @hummingbird604 http://bit.ly/RDGkgh to enter to win a space at @thehungryoven summer camp

3) Re-pin my Pin of this blog post on Pinterest.

4) Drop a comment on my Pin of this blog post telling me about your favorite recipe. Again, a short description would suffice.

I will draw a random winner from all entries on July 20th, 2012 at 2pm.

A quick recipe I do is baked cauliflower with cumin and lemon juice with hummus dip on the side (chick peas, olive oil, tahini, salt, lemon).

Would love to win this prize for my niece!

Kale chips -so easy and so impossible to eat only one! I like to add coconut before toasting.
My daughter can cook a few things but would love to learn more.

I could probably eat BLT’s forever. I only like them when the lettuce is iceberg, the toast isn’t too toasty, the tomato isn’t too ripe, the bacon is between the lettuce and the tomato, it’s topped off with a runny over easy egg and a shit ton of mayo and sriracha. On a hot day there’s nothing better than washing that all down with an iced tea.
