Rona Maynard starts by sharing a laughter with the audience “imagine all the chores you could be taking care of, instead of being here in this conference” . The well spring. You do not have an infinite supply of what  your well spring holds. Rona is a born storyteller, first sharing a story of a planned holiday with her husband. Rona checked her passport for the 149th time. Her husband says “oh right – that reminds me, I must grab my passport“, which wasn’t where he expected.

@RonaMaynard LIVE at @Breathe_Now !!! What a pleasure #breatheyyj http://twitpic.com/99t87sBreathe Now
Enjoying your talk! The Well-Spring… Sigh. @RonaMaynard #breatheyyjjanniaragon
Rona threw herself to the floor and began to sob. The most extraordinary insights can occur to a person who has got her face buried in a carpet: whose problem is this anyway; hey, I got MY passport. Sweetheart, I have got a plane to catch. When you find your passport, find me in Amsterdam. It was the most relaxing flight I had! Her husband and Rona caught up in Amsterdam and had a most wonderful time.
The resentment tax – the tax that keeps on taking. The longer you button your lips and keep doing and doing, the more you’re putting up with what you feel. Rona had an epiphany about how much she had learned since she was little. Her Dad was an alcoholic and her Mom was a brilliant and vicious woman who thought being a woman, at her time, that it was her wifely duty to pretend that everything was ok and to cater to her husband. Rona wanted a better life than her Mom’s but she did not know how to do that. Unfortunately she was unable to do so because she didn’t have a vision of what self-care meant (because she thought it was being selfish).
@RonaMaynard "the resentment tax" stop doing it – great advice!!! #breatheyyjKyara Kahakauwila
"Self care does not mean selfish" @RonaMaynard #breatheyyjHeather del Villano
Rona got caught on the whole thrill and adrenaline of complying with deadlines. Resentment left behind. But Rona didn’t feel much of herself. She slipped into depression so deep that she felt that the best way that she could help this world was by removing herself from this world. She started having fantasies involving a bath tub and a razor blade. Her well spring looked as far removed as the moon. But as deep in the dark as she was, she realized that her family would miss her. At her lowest low, she felt like a sickly plant. But then she made a call that changed her life, to a woman’s mental health site.

Once she looked in the mirror, she for the first time liked what she felt in the mirror. She bought a turquoise leotard. It became her favorite outfit because she looked so sharp in it.
NO protects ur emotional ecosystem. A firm, unequivocal NO is key to renewal, & healthy ties to people in ur life – @RonaMaynard #BreatheYYJRaul Pacheco
No protects your emotional ecosystem. A firm and  unequivocal NO is key to removal, and for the sake of healthy ties to the people in your life. Rona was able to manifest to her mother how she felt and her mother heard her love, and stopped complaining about Rona’s sister. Her relationship with Rona (Rona’s Mom) entered the healthiest phase of their lives.

. @RonaMaynard I’m loving your talk! #breatheyyjjanniaragon
Women would write to Rona “because of your article, I quit my abusive husband“. Or “because of your article, I quit my dreaded job“. She was creating a national meeting place, where women could share their wisdom. So what if she never presented in a boardroom – she had something special to bring to the room. As they shared their stories, they filled her well spring with good experiences.
@RonaMaynard You are so REFRESHING, HONEST, REAL, FUNNY & INSPIRING. Thank you for speaking #breatheyyj. cc @Breathe_NowKyara Kahakauwila
Rona talks a bit about compliments. She mentions how we are very good at giving compliments, but shrug off praise for all the great things you have done. A thoughtful compliment will help you identify your greatest gifts so you can channel them. It was a perfect fit for Chatelaine. Fast-forward a few years – there Rona was, in her dream job.

. @ronamaynard Listening to her talk. Wow, great preso. Any keynote coach would say: Brava! #Breatheyyjjanniaragon
Rona’s biggest challenge was to protect the quality of the time she had. She had to learn to tune out the static and listen to the song, that was her mission for the magazine. Running Chatelaine was much like raising a teen. With every conflict, she would ask herself “how important is this going to be a day from now?“.

The readers changed, they had more competitors all the time. Every time Rona thought she had everything figured out, another problem would surface. Then, by degrees, something wonderful happened. She realized that success was not about eliminating problems, it was about staying fresh and focus of the problems that were coming.
Keep the well-spring full. #breatheyyj @RonaMaynardjanniaragon
^RPV – love how Rona Maynard mentions how she prioritizes things – what is urgent and what is not…
Urgent is "do you smell smoke?" Not "what Colour for the office?" people who say "got a minute?" @RonaMaynard key note @ #breatheyyjKyara Kahakauwila
@RonaMaynard "Sincere praise is the best way to combat severe criticism." #breatheyyjKyara Kahakauwila
@RonaMaynard love your imagined response to Mrs. Outrage! Humor restores the wellspring. #breatheyyjDeb Morse

3 Protective Habits

1. Exercise – it gave Rona her joy to move. So she joined a YWCA close to her office. Her workout was a very important appointment with herself. She would let her mind wander. Rona saw the beauty of women who look after the bodies that nature gave them.
2. Celebrate the shiny moments – every night before going to sleep, Rona gives thanks and reflects on whatever wonderful thing happened to her that day. She forgets about life little’s zingers
3. Stay inspired – she kept an inspiration board above her desk. She covered it with personal talismans (her board) and they never failed to lift her mood.

@RonaMaynard. Best defense against burn out – meditate on the positive every day. #breatheyyjDeb Morse
Stay fit, stay connected, stay inspired – Rona’s ground rules to today.

For close to a decade Rona absolutely adored her job. But one day, for once, she did not feel like going to the office on Sunday. Her heart sank a little bit with the idea of going to work on Monday. So Rona started to write, and write again, and there she created a memoir (a project that took double the time she expected. But that was ok).
@ronaMaynard No such thing as reinvention. Instead reimagine your life and throw your arms around the problems. #breatheyyjDeb Morse
