Calendar Girls at The Arts Club (win tickets)

A couple of years ago I participated in Ahimsa Media’s project “Reading Is Sexy” calendar. It was supposed to be shot “Calendar Girls” style. But truth be told, I wasn’t about to bare my all (at least not while I’m an educator, and without a 6 pack and a perfect body!). Anyhow, in conversations with people, most will recognize the phrase Calendar Girls, and there is a reason for it. Namely, Dame Helen Mirren.

As part of their 2011/2012 season, The Arts Club is presenting Calendar Girls, and I have an exclusive giveaway for a pair of tickets to Opening Night.

When middle-aged Annie Clarke loses her husband to leukemia, her best friend suggests a—ahem—cheeky new way to raise money for research. But their fellow Women’s Institute members balk at baring—well, almost baring—it all! Gradually, though, these prim tea-and-crumpets ladies “of a certain age” come around and learn to delight in their newfound pluckiness and status as international sensations.

The Arts Club is presenting Calendar Girls from January 26th through to February 26th, 2012 at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage. You can purchase tickets here. And to enter my giveaway for a pair of tickets to opening night, all you need to do is on the comments section, tell me an anecdote about your closest group of friends. Calendar Girls is all about friendship, and about being there for each other, so why don’t you share a tidbit about how your friends have been there for you? In particular, I have to praise a small group of my closest friends whom I didn’t meet through social media, because they have coped rather well with my being “an online social hummingbird”. They’ve been there for me in the good and in the bad, especially in my doctoral dissertation defense.

You can add an entry for a maximum of two by posting the following on Twitter:

I will draw a random winner on January 19th, at 2pm. Good luck everyone, and hopefully you’ll get a chance to check out Calendar Girls. Promises to be much fun!

My friends are all mostly chill people but when they know someone is in need of help they go above and beyond to help that person out

My best friend asked me if I would marry her husband if she died. What an honour.

My friends manage to text, call, or otherwise check in on me when I’m at my lowest, even though there is no way they could know. They keep me happy and sane. :)

We may not see each other every day, but when we do get together for dinner, our conversations go on for hours and hours and it feels like we haven’t missed a beat. Nothing’s changed since high school!

Most of my friends are on Facebook… I’m actually in Cuba for the opening night…. so will be going to the show when we get back but thought I’d enter anyways!

There’s 6 of us and we’ve met at least once a month (usually twice) for 21 years. We have seen each other through SO much, I could never list it all here; births, deaths, divorces, stray teens, weddings…

We all love each other so much and are so supportive. I don’t know where I’d be without my ‘touched mom’s’ as we call ourselves.

My friends and I appreciate a clear evening, a good topic and a single malt, or very, very dark beer.
