Win tickets to @GohBallet “The Nutcracker”
Vancouver is, despite the repeated attempts on shutting down any support for the arts, a thriving arts community in many ways. I reviewed last year The Nutcracker by the Goh Ballet, and ever since, I have had a really close relationship with this wonderful ballet ensemble. And this year we have a bit of an embarrassment of riches as there are at the very least two productions of The Nutcracker this year by wonderful ballet performers.
I am lucky enough to be able to give away a pair of tickets to the opening night of the Goh Ballet’s production of The Nutcracker which opens December 15th, 2011 at the Centre in Vancouver for the Performing Arts. My tickets are for opening night (this Goh Ballet production goes until Dec 18th, so it’s a really short run and you should make the maximum effort to try and catch the production). The Goh Ballet’s technical prowess is outstanding (I say this as a former competitive dancer).

Going to see The Nutcracker every year with my family was such a special tradition for me: I used to do ballet and loved watching the ballerinas in their amazing costumes. My parents would combine the ballet with a ski weekend in Banff and we got to stay at the Banff Springs Hotel and what a treat that was! The Nutcracker is definitely the most beautiful ballet because it is so full of fantasy and joy.
Our family Christmas tradition: after dinner we would always play scrabble together and have my mom’s famous homemade fruitt cake for dessert!
Our holiday tradition is to travel to somewhere exotic and have summery drinks on the beach on Christmas Day!

As part of our Scandinavian tradition, we open gifts on Christmas Eve.
The four of us (2 young kids) get dressed up in our fancy clothes for Christmas dinner.
I don’t come from a family who really values tradition all that much; however, it is always tradition that we use my mum’s best Royal Daulton china (Princess Diana’s pattern) at Christmas dinner along with crystal goblets and gold-plated cutlery.
We love to go to see the lights at Christmas. We roam around and try to check out the best lit neighbourhoods.
Since my family doesn’t really celebrate any holidays, my tradition is to attend church Christmas concerts/service every year.
We go to a Christmas tree farm and cut down our own Christmas tree each year.
As much as I’ve admired, I never had the luxury to watch live Christmas ballets and/or shows. Instead, I snuggle on the couch, by the Christmas tree, watching Christmas cartoons. It’s a wonderful, relaxing feeling that brings back childhood days.. 🙂
My tradition for my family will be going relatives house visit each other..
We have make a Christmas advent calendar with little gifts for the kids. I hand wrap an assortment of little gifts for our kids and they take turns opening one each morning. The calendar that we used is handmade and is on it’s third generation of kids – it was originally made by my husband’s Aunt in 1966 in Finland. over the years, it’s been used in Helsinki, Chertsey (England), Toronto, Montreal, Boston, and now Vancouver!
My hands down favourite Christmas tradition is that no matter what is happening in our lives, my sister and I will always stay at my moms for Christmas Eve, and Christmas morning we sneak downstairs like we’re still a couple 8 year olds, and look at our piles of presents by the light of just the Christmas tree. We often will exchange our gifts to each other than too. Than it’s off to Nana’s for brunch with the extended family!!
Every Christmas Eve we spend eating and singing carols around the piano. In the morning we open gifts, which always includes my favourite, Stuart McLean’s latest novel of Canadian short-stories. We read them aloud and laugh, a lot. The years we’ve been snowed in in Abbotsford have been the best!
We watch a holiday movie every year. The past few years it has been Four Christmases and we leave it on all day
I love going to the Christmas Market with family or friends each year. Love the food, crafts and free mug!
This sounds like fun- have never been to the ballet! As for traditions- Chrismas day involves unwrapping presents, eating a lovely meal, and watching lots of movies (in both English and Hindi.) the main tradition though is to have a relaxing day- something that seems have become increasingly rare
Reading the Night Before Christmas – the night before christmas, (now the children read it to us!)
Going to a performance of Handel’s Messiah. I never get tired of hearing that piece live.
My tradition is watching A Charlie Brown Christmas on Christmas Day! I love all the music and atmosphere surrounding Christmas, but at the end of the day, I want to be able to understand that Christmas is a season of giving and spending time with friends. The movie, although seemingly childish, actually makes me realize the importance of love on Christmas 😀
Having a xmas get together with all the relatives coming and bringing food on Xmas eve.

My christmas tradition is staying up late on christmas eve after we have dinner and we unwrap presents at midnight. The next morning, a pancake breakfast is a must.
We all sleep over at my parents’ house on Christmas Eve. Then on Christmas morning, we make waffles and open gifts together.
Every Christamas we ask “Posada” (pedimos Posada) on the 24th. It’s a Mexican tradition where we sing and light candels and ask posada.
Our Christmas tradition is having a big Chrismas dinner together and afterwords we play variety of games, card games, board games, video games, etc and eat lots of chocolates!

When I was a kid it was the nutcracker. Now I love to take mine to the lights at Capilano suspension bridge.
