The Sound of Music (Gateway Theatre) [win tickets]

For many reasons, The Sound of Music is one of the world’s most popular and probably also most favorite musical theatre productions. Based on the story of Maria Von Trapp, The Sound of Music is fun, uplifting and humorous. Gateway Theatre (one of my favorite theatre companies) has had a pretty amazing 2011/2012 season, and their upcoming show (The Sound of Music) is opening on December 8th, promising to be amazing.

All you need to do to enter my giveaway is tell me your favorite song from this wonderful musical.I will draw a winner on December 6th at 2pm. Shared my fave song from The Sound of Music w/ @hummingbird604 to enter to win tix to the @Gateway_Theatre production http://is.gd/eSPcoL

The Sound of Music is on from December 8th through 31st. You can buy tickets here. A synopsis from the Gateway Theatre’s site follows.

The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain’s immediate service in their navy. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The motion picture version remains the most popular movie musical of all time.

I think Edelweiss is my favourite. It has a great tune, and of course it’s easy to play on the recorder, and its simple significance in terms of what it meant in the Resistance fight is amazing.

So long, farewell!

I saw a few members of the actual Von Trap family perform it in Salzburg in 1997. It was in the theatre where the scene in the movie where they are performing in the talent show takes place.
