World Kindness Concert 2011
Honestly, if there is something we need in the world right now, is a little bit more kindness. In my case, I have been on the receiving end of some pretty negative comments and nasty attacks online, for no reason. But the one thing that keeps giving me hope is the fact that there are so many people who are focused on promoting random acts of kindness.
So when I was approached by the organizers of the World Kindness Concert to write about the event and promote it, I knew that this was something I really wanted to do. I am thrilled to see that there are so many wonderful artists that are involved in such a positive event. Some of the Top Performers confirmed include the following:
- ABRA Cadabra
- Dirty Radio
- Jane Mortifee
- Leora Cashe
- Michaela Slinger
- Ranj Singh
- Shari Ulrich
- Sibel Thrasher
- Vancouver Children’s Choir
- Warren Dean Flandez – Finalist on CBC’s ‘Cover Me Canada’
The World Kindness Concert celebrates its 11th year by gathering world class performers to celebrate and promote the messages of kindness, compassion, love and peace, and to touch the hearts of people around the world. This is more than just a Concert. This is a Global Movement to eliminate violence, bullying, suicide, cruelty and abuse to our environment.
I’m quite excited about our fair city’s own tribute band ABRA Cadabra, one of my absolute favorites DiRTY RADiO. I am also very sure that the energy that will emanate from the concert will be really positive and that people will leave the event recharged and thinking of ways to engage in more random acts of kindness. Funds raised go both towards the concert itself and keeping the cost low, and also towards Kindness Rocks. Tickets are $47, but you can win a pair via Hummingbird604.com!

What a great question – I haven’t stopped long enough to ask this question and realized I’ve got so many to pick from. That says a lot and warms the heart.
This summer I was walking my dog around Gastown and she did some of her business on the sidewalk on the corner of Powell and Carrall. I didn’t have the plastic bag I thought I did, so looked for an option before heading home to grab one. One of the can collectors who lives in the area walked by with a shopping cart and had some of his bottles in a bag – I stopped and asked if he’d be willing to part with it. He couldn’t give it to me fast enough – he told me that it’s rare anyone outside his circles ever asks anything of him and he was just so excited.
Not wanting to leave it as one-sided (though there’s nothing wrong with that), I knew I could do something for him, so after cleaning the street, he came back to my apartment where I helped fill his cart a little bit from what I had around the house. It helped me clear up some space at negligible cost.
On one hand, this was a paid transaction, but that was just the result. None of it was planned or intended and it was driven entirely by real goodwill.

A few months ago, I was at a movie theatre. A woman saw me in line, told me she had two tickets but her husband couldn’t come, and would I like one? I was very happy for that, of course, and I tried to buy her some concession, but she wouldn’t accept.
This may seem relatively minor, and of course I’ve received many kindnesses, but this is the easiest to write about and explain in a blog comment
.

I found a set of keys on the walkway- house keys that had an address on them. I contacted the owner who couldn’t beleive that someone would return them – it was Christmas time. They were thinking they would have to replace their locks – we got a bottle of ‘thank you’ wine!
I found a credit card on a park bench when I was out walking – I called the credit card company to tell them – they couldn’t stop marveling that I had taken the time to call and said that very few people do this.
I found an iPhone at a instabank cash machine about a week ago. The bank was already closed. I knocked on the door. They were reluctant to open the door. I explained that someone has left the phone at the cash machine. I slipped it under the door to them. I was hoping whoever left the phone would remember where they left it and return to the bank or call the phone to see who had it.
UPDATE – The winner is Dave Macdonald. Dave, can you shoot me an email so we can coordinate delivery of tickets?
Thanks everyone!
