Happy Canadian Thanksgiving, 2011 edition
There are a million reasons why I am thankful this year, even though this is perhaps the year where I have lost the most people in my life (not only to death, in the case of my cousin, my friend Derek K. Miller and the relatives of several close friends of mine) but also in the friendship realm. I decided this year to make my circle of closer friends even smaller, and to not pursue nor invest time attempting to sustain friendships that have faded for one reason or another.
And, contrary to what other people may think (and even perhaps a bit counter-intuitive) I am thankful for that. I’m thankful that I can make better use of my time and spend it with people who love me and care about me.
- I’m thankful that this year has been professionally, the most rewarding in the past 6 years even though my sleep has suffered consequently.
- I’m thankful that my family is doing well, despite our losses, and despite health challenges.
- I’m thankful that my close friends continue to love me, sometimes in spite of my being challenged for time, because they know I’m focusing on my professional development.
- I’m thankful that a few friends I was already close have grown closer. I’m also incredibly grateful for JT and what he brings to my life on an everyday basis
- I’m thankful for the success my projects have had this year, both those that are directly mine and those that are collateral and I’m involved on an extra-curricular basis.
- I’m thankful that my blog is doing so well and that I recruited 2 incredibly talented interns who have demonstrated that they can sustain their own careers while helping me with my site, and evolving through the process.
- I’m thankful that I came back to higher-level volleyball and I am able to demonstrate I still got what it takes to be a competitive volleyball player.
- I’m thankful that I’m going to close this year with new projects, new challenges and something to look forward in 2012.
- I’m thankful that I got to do projects with friends of mine, specially the e-book with Arieanna, as this was something I had wanted to do for a long, long time
What are you thankful for? And… happy Canadian Thanksgiving!

Nice, thoughtful post, Raul. It is important I think to continually reflect upon and recognize your blessings in life. I am thankful for many things; my family, my friends, my work and my country, to name a few! Happy thanksgiving to you!
