Trouble in Tahiti – Vancouver International Fringe Festival 2011 (giveaway)

All of the 2011 Vancouver International Fringe Festival shows are special in their own way, but this one is extra-special: it’s an opera.

Produced by the Vancouver Concert Cooperative, Trouble in Tahiti is an opera by Leonard Bernstein and performed by local opera artists.

With past performances described as “riveting, passionate, poignant and totally satisfying” (Opera Canada 2011) this is a show not to be missed! A suburban opera for the 21 century. Join our hip Greek chorus (Katherine Landry, Paul Just, Grant Wardlow) as they observe a day in the life of Sam (Ed Moran) and Dinah (Natalie Burdeny), two Vancouverites who are desperately unhappy, lonely for love, and unable to communicate.  Will they find a way to resolve their issues and live happily ever after? The jazz influenced score by Leonard Bernstein, creator of West Side Story, will leave you?  Come and find out!

You’re in luck, dear readers: two of you will find out for free with our two-ticket giveaway* for any of these representations (you choose):

  • Saturday, September 10    6:45pm

My favorite aria is “Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves” from Nabucco. But I’m not sure Nabucco is my favorite opera. But in any event, I’m sure my favorite opera is by Verdi.

My favourite aria has to be ‘Recitar? / Vesti la giubba’ from I Pagliacci. But as a whole work, Madama Butterfly wins out as my favourite opera. The love story is compelling, Puccini’s music is beautiful (‘Un bel di vedremo’ ranks among the classic arias of all time, and the rest of the music has a moving and cohesive thematic quality), and Cio-Cio’s plight (and that of her son) never fails to pull at the heartstrings at the end. Like many artistic works that end up being hailed as classics, Madama Butterfly was poorly received and reviewed when it premiered. In the fullness of time, however, we have learned better.
