When I was, Qui Je suis (review)

Local talent abounds in Vancouver and dancing is no exception. The local company Les Petites Taquines have put up a dance show at the intimate Pacific Theatre at 12th Avenue and Hemlock that you should definitely attend. HB604 was invited to the premiere on August 4th and I (Anabelle) went to see the recital.

The show puts in music and movement the four different stages of the growth of a woman: childhood, adolescence, early adulthood and motherhood. It’s not one of those cryptic contemporary dance recitals; I thought the story well told, the transitions well done and the performance enjoyable in general. The choreography was simple yet effective and beautiful. It was easy to identify with each stage (each performed by a different dancer) and the music was perfectly suited to the mood and meaning of each piece.

I’m not a dance expert by any stretch of the imagination so this is very much a neophyte review. I imagine that if even an uninitiated spectator such as me had a good time, then you probably will too!

Francine, Jackie, Andrea and Linsy will be performing for another two nights, until Saturday August 6th. For 10$ in advance and 12$ at the door, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t start your weekend with When I was, Qui Je suis. Broadway is just around the corner too, so it’s a great alternative to a movie before getting drinks at a local pub.
