Live at Squamish 2011
I find that music festivals are one of the best ways to enjoy some of my favourite artists. Something about laying down a picnic blanket and relaxing with a few friends and snacks seems like the way some music was meant to be enjoyed. Throw in BC’s natural beauty as a backdrop and I’ve got my perfect weekend in mind.
Live At Squamish 2011 is on my weekend plans. This relatively new music festival to hit the west-coast summer festival scene has grown up pretty fast. For it’s second year running, it’s already attracted a massive lineup for the weekend of August 20th and 21st. From classic Canadian indie band Metric, to the dance-until-you-drop mixes of Girltalk, to local hip hop talent Kyprios of Sweatshop Union, over to insane guitarists in the John Butler Trio, and many more. With only two stages, it should be easy to coordinate and run back and forth to catch as many acts as possible.
Presented up at the Logger’s Sports Grounds in Squamish, BC, this is pretty much the ideal place to drop a large crowd of young fans and leave them for two days. The surrounding forest is expansive and pristine: perfect for muting the late night reverberation of bass lines, the camping is world-class, and the boundary lines are guarded by bears to prevent any escapees or people sneaking in. Just kidding about the bears… kind of.
More than just the music… this festival will also have a variety of food and drinks. Water stations will be available to bring your own waterbottle… and more details to know are here.
Other events than live shows, such as a Silent Disco, have also been announced. What is that, you may ask? A DJ will be playing a full dance set, but each attendee will be given a pair of headphones and will only be able to hear the music through them. To the dancers, it’s just another night out on the town (or in Squamish… not exactly the same thing) but to onlookers it just looks ridiculous. For those of you who are equally as curious as I… I’ll see you there!
Just Announced (Aug 2nd): The schedule has been adjusted to fit in two Metric sets: one full performance, and one acoustic. For anyone who admires Emily Haine’s amazing talent, this is great news!

Would love to see Metric, a recent fan but heard they’ll be playing an acoustic set.
Hmmm… GirlTalk in Squamish. Weezer is my all time favourite band but dancing my face off in that setting with Greg would be tops.
Metric all the way. Never seen them live.
Would be really excited to check out Brasstronaut – a local band from Vancouver emerging on the scene. Incredible arrangements and lyrics – it would be so great to see and hear them with the Squamish Valley as a back drop. Pick me! Pick me!
I would die to see Shad and Major Lazer. Two acts I’ve been wanting to see forever and never get the chance too!
MAJOR LAZER. *Cue frantic jumping.
So many bands and only two days. List is long but really want to see both Metric sets.

I was lucky enough to go last year and it was an exhilarating breath of fresh air and a lot of fun! The Dudes rocked it and I’m looking forward to seeing them again. Last time I saw Doc Martin was probably 8 years ago so the nostalgia factor is strong for me. Also excited to see Dubtribe Sound System, Weezer, John Butler Trio and of course Metric. It’s impossible to pick just one!! Great music in a beautiful nook of BC, surrounded by friends you haven’t even met yet. What more can one ask for? Oh yeah… free tickets would be Awesome!!!
Definitely excited to see Brasstronaut again live, but I’ve never seen the John Butler Trio, and that would be a real treat!
Metric and Weezer would be my top two!
Most excited to see Girl Talk! Always a great show.
Stars is an all-time favourite!
Just seen Kim Churchill at Montreal Jazz Fest. Young, good story teller, and very talented.
The line-up is great but I’m most interested in seeing Metric and what a bonus to have an additional acoustic set! I JUST missed them at Pemberton due to the slow feed of crowds.
Metric! Saw them last year @ Malkin Bowl. What great show. Emily Haines has the most excellent voice! The acoustic set will be fantastic.
I gotta go with an acoustic set by Metric!
I want to see Girl Talk so bad!! He puts on such an energetic and amazinf show and everyone always leaves feeling so upbeat and happy. Also excited to see Stars. Proof that Canadians make the best music.
