Dancing on the Edge Festival (July 7-16th, 2011)
Despite the fact that I’m a trained dancer and that this event was top-of-my-mind for the past month, Dancing on the Edge Festival (which started last July 7th but you can still catch until July 16th), a festival of contemporary dance, completely slipped my mind. But I’m happy that at least you can still catch 3 days of the Festival (July 13-16th).
I love the tagline of the 23nd Annual Dancing on the Edge Festival, which is “presenting innovative dance where festival artists take their art to the edge”. The 2011 festival once again features some really interesting and outstanding performances that will be found in some unexpected places.
Performances will take place in venues throughout the city – from the flagship location at the Firehall Arts Centre, Queen Elizabeth Park, Crab Park, outside the main branch of the VPL, Victory Square, The Roundhouse and the Scotiabank Dance Centre.
Renowned Israeli choreographer Arkadi Zaides will open Dancing on the Edge with his powerful work “Quiet”. This piece arose in light of the growing violence and mistrust between communities in Israel, constantly subjected to states of shock never allowing the space needed for reflection, and for change. It creates a place where it is safe to let one’s demons out and set them free; where a broad perspective is sought and where trust is continuously built. Palestinians and Israelis, actors and dancers, nourished the process. The four characters in the piece reveal a landscape which contains aggression, compassion, confusion and yearning for a place that is quiet. This North American premiere is not to be missed.
The Festival includes many members of our dynamically talented Vancouver community as well as companies and dancers from across the country including Susanna Hood’s one-woman performance of the Vancouver premiere of She’s Gone Away at the Scotiabank Dance Centre, Dusk Dances at Queen Elizabeth Park, Aeriosa animating vertical space at the Vancouver Public Library, along with Dancemakers – It’s about time: 60 dances in 60 minutes , The 605 Collective, Tara Cheyenne Performance, and Josh Beamish’s Move: The Company to name a few.
