Happy Fourth of July (Independence Day in the United States of America)
I know that US citizens prefer to call themselves “American” as though Canadians and Mexicans and the rest of the southern hemisphere aren’t Americans, but I prefer to call them US citizens (in Spanish we call them “estadounidenses”, or “from the United States”, which is still kind of inaccurate as Mexicans are citizens of the Mexican United States – Estados Unidos Mexicanos).
Anyhow… I have a lot of US-born and US-based friends, two of my brothers and many of my nieces and nephews live in the United States of America, and some of them already have US citizenship. As a result, I think they will be celebrating and it’s a day worth celebrating as well. Even though the relationship between US citizens and Mexican citizens is actually rather rocky (thanks to decades of illegal immigration and rather draconian immigration laws north of the Mexican border), I am proud to say I have many, many friends who are US citizens.
The truth is, a government doesn’t represent a nation, and I love my US friends and family because they are amazing people, not because they are citizens of the United States of America. So, on July 4th, Happy Independence Day, USA!
