As You Like It (Bard on the Beach)

as you like itIt’s almost the summer and it’s time for one of my absolute favorite shows (and one of the organizations that partners with me all the time and supports my efforts): Bard on the Beach.

I’m a Shakespeare theatre fanatic, and I’m delighted to be partnering again with Bard on the Beach. Their summer lineup looks pretty amazing, with works like As You Like It, and the Merchant of Venice (one of my absolute favorites). You can in fact buy tickets to As You Like It here.

In this merriest of comedies, Shakespeare draws on his signature themes of disguise, misplaced affections and pastoral passion. The setting is ripe for romance when Rosalind, daughter of the banished Duke, runs away in disguise with her cousin Celia to the Forest of Arden. There they meet a pair of feuding brothers and Rosalind, who is masquerading as a young man called Ganymede, finds herself uniquely poised to teach her unknowing suitor Orlando the way to win a woman’s heart. Offering their own commentary on life and love are the melancholy Jaques and the wry clown Touchstone.

bard on the beachI have a pair of tickets for Friday June 10th, at 8pm to give away. And one lucky reader of mine could be the winner of these tickets.

All you have to do is tell me who you would take with you to see As You Like It on Bard on the Beach and why. Personally, I know that JT and I will be going to Bard on the Beach together as it’s one of our traditions. I’ve taken other friends along with me, like my friend Trevor Boudreau and two of my closest friends, Jay Catalan and Minna Van (and I assume I’ll do the same this year.

You can earn an additional entry by posting the following on Twitter (if you do both, comment and tweet, you earn a total and maximum of 2 entries).

Told @hummingbird604 who I’d take to @BardOnTheBeach to enter & win tickets 4 “As You Like It” http://is.gd/3WKulP – who would you take?

I will draw a winner on Wednesday June 8th at 7pm. Good luck everyone!

I would absolutely take my friend Irene, who is a hugely dedicated fan of Bard on the Beach. She is also the person who introduced me to Bard in the first place!

I had all but given up getting to know this girl I liked – she was a serious student and made it clear she wasn’t interested in me. A chance conversation established we both loved the Bard – that was over 20 years ago and now our daughters are discovering Shakespeare. I would take my wife and buy extra tickets for my girls to come as well!

My husband, so we could relive our days as English majors at SFU. “As You Like It” brings up some interesting questions about gender roles, too.

I have been in training for a charity ride coming up (my first ever and I’m not very athletic!) and have been organizing a huge fundraiser being held on the 9th June. I would simply take a dear friend who has stepped in to help with the fundraiser in a big way to wind down & spend some time enjoying the labours of ancient and modern wordsmiths and creatives!

I would take my boyfriend (together four years and counting!) because we both love Shakespeare’s work and the drama, intelligence, and sharp wit of his plays.

JackieJune 6th, 2011 at 12:06 pm

I would take my twin sister as we both had the honour and privilege of studying Shakespeare under Tony Dawson at UBC…while we acted in our class version of Merchant of Venice, As You Like It was another of the plays we studied and is great fun! We both graduated UBC English Lit. ’03

I would take my friend, Brad, because he loves Shakespeare.

AndyJune 7th, 2011 at 5:23 am

My best girl (wife) loves the bard.

Louise BoutinJune 7th, 2011 at 2:10 pm

I would take my daughter, Jacqueline, as she has been working hard all year with her students at John Oliver HH. We have always loved live theatre and she saw As You Like It when she was only 5 and loved it!!

DilaraJune 8th, 2011 at 12:06 am

I would take my best friend because we’ve been going every year since Highschool and we’ve “matured” together… and we loved As You Like It.

Katie LJune 8th, 2011 at 11:44 am

I would take my boyfriend to Bard on The Beach, if he lived in BC, but for now, I’d take my friend Emma. We like to laugh and she is a BIG theatre fanatic. She’s in Studio at Langara right now and I know she’d love to go see this.

EileenJune 8th, 2011 at 11:48 am

My mom, or my friend who’s visiting from Japan…

Stephen ReesJune 8th, 2011 at 11:49 am

I would take my partner – of course. When I lived in London I seemed to find many ways to get to see plays at little or no cost – but that was there and a while ago. I try to get to Bard every year – and I am very pleased that this year they are introducing advanced seat reservations. I am sure that this will hit their concession sales but I am sure they know what they are doing.

BarbaraJune 8th, 2011 at 11:55 am

I would love to bring my wonderful friend Joyce to see “As You Like It”. We go every year and it would be nice to take her to Bard before I leave the country.

EricJune 8th, 2011 at 11:58 am

Id love to take my good friend Caitlin because she loves plays and it’d be fun to watch them together!

SarannaJune 8th, 2011 at 1:22 pm

I would take either my friend Fiona (a yearly tradition)… or my partner… (I’d have to buy a 3rd ticket I think! I’ll be in trouble if I don’t take both!! LOL)

JimJune 8th, 2011 at 3:21 pm

I would like to take Elizabeth I to the play. I would like to get her take on the politics of the day and get her impression of shakespear’s wit.
Was she offended by the political plays? ps I could find out what he really looked like

WesJune 8th, 2011 at 9:15 pm

I would take my lovely burnt out wife, and have our good friend baby sit our newborn for the evening. I’ve never been but my wife has once and she loved it.
