L’Amour (Goh Ballet) at the Centre in Vancouver for the Performing Arts
You may know that I’m a former competitive dancer. While never a ballet dancer, I have done enough contemporary to understand the beauty and complexity of ballet. And one of my favorite ballet companies is Goh Ballet. You may remember that in December of 2010 I reviewed the Goh Ballet’s exquisite performance of The Nutcracker. Well, now 2 lucky readers of mine (and many more, hopefully, as tickets are selling fast) will get a chance to witness their amazing dancing skills in their upcoming show, L’Amour, a one-day-engagement at The Centre in Vancouver for the Performing Arts, on June 4th, 2011.
Goh Ballet’s production of L’amour on June 4th at the Centre in Vancouver for Performing Arts will offer Vancouverites a rare opportunity to witness a privileged sampling of the works which they will perform in China this August. Uniquely stunning repertoire combined with the award winning young Goh Ballet dancers’ exemplary performance quality garnered them this special invitation. L’amour features dancers Yoshiko Kamikusa, recent Tanzolymp Gold Medalist and Danielle Gould, Youth America Grand Prix Prize Winner with newly staged repertoire and specially commissioned choreography. This performance production marks a momentous occasion for the dancers to share their pride and artistic talents with the City of Vancouver. Always in pursuit of achieving further artistic excellence and reaching new heights, the Goh Ballet is honoured to accept this cultural exchange invitation from the Chinese Government. A group of 35 Goh Ballet dancers will travel to four cities in China.

Because I cannot even fathom what it takes to dance en pointe, I feel like ballet really transports me to a different place. It’s a beautiful escape!
I have never been to the ballet but i enjoy watching them dance.
Being an ex-ballerina, there are a lot of things I love about ballet. What I love the most is the dancers’ ability to express every emotion from fear to longing to arrogance to giddiness through their bodies. Their limbs speak louder than anything.
Beautifully and effortlessly, ballet dancers perform moves that the rest of the population can only imagine doing in their dreams. When I saw La La La Human Steps at Place des Arts in Montreal in 1995, I was shocked and inspired. Until then, I thought ballet was impressive but dull. That company changed my opinion forever of the possibilities of ballet.

I love the ballet and also used to dance when I was younger. Never competitively but I have a huge appreciation for the stories that are told through dance. Now that I have a young daughter I love the ballet even more for the way I see it makes her heart sing!

My first ballet was The Nutcracker as a young girl when I first came to Canada; I’ve loved it since. Although I no longer take dance, I continue to love how evocative performances are; how ballets manage to tell an all-encompassing story through dance and music that really draws the audience in. The technical skill involved is also amazing!
