The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma (win tickets)

I was raised in a household full with classical music. My Mom used to be an opera singer, my Dad used to play classic guitar and my 4 brothers and I were trained in classical piano. So, as I grew up, I got used to enjoy a variety of types of classical music beyond piano. One of the folks I’ve admired for long has been world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma, who luckily will be in Vancouver soon with his project, The Silk Road Ensemble. And the Vancouver Recital Society has entrusted me with a tickets to give away.

The Sillk Road Project sounds like an amazing endeavour.

The Silk Road Ensemble is a collective of internationally renowned performers and composers from more than 20 countries. Each Ensemble member’s career responds to one of the preeminent artistic challenges of our times: to maintain the integrity of art rooted in authentic traditions while nourishing global connections.

Many of the musicians first came together under the artistic direction of Yo-Yo Ma at a workshop at Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts in 2000. Since then, in various configurations, Ensemble artists have collaborated on a diverse range of musical and multimedia projects, presenting innovative performances that spring from Eastern and Western traditions and contemporary musical crossroads.

The Silk Road Ensemble has performed to critical acclaim throughout Asia, Europe and North America and has recorded five albums. The Ensemble’s most recent recording, Off the Map (2009 In a Circle Records; 2009 World Village), was nominated for a Grammy award. It explores uncharted territory with globe-spanning music commissioned from Osvaldo Golijov, Gabriela Lena Frank, Evan Ziporyn and Angel Lam.

The Silk Road Ensemble with Yo-Yo Ma is playing on Sunday April 10th, 2011 at 7:30pm at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver. You can get tickets online here. And I have 2 tickets to give away to one lucky reader.

Would love to see these amazing musicians in concert.

I love the music of the Silk Road Ensemble & Yo-Yo Ma! In my opinion, there is nothing more evocative than the music produced by the string instruments, especially the cello. The piece “The Chairman’s Waltz” from the film Memoirs of a Geisha is one of the most incredibly beautiful, melancholy, and affecting pieces of music I have ever heard, due in no small part of Ma and his cello.

I have never heard Yo-Yo Ma play live before, so would love the opportunity to win some tickets to attend his performance (and also listen to the other wonderful musicians who will be performing).

This would be an incredible performance!!! I would love to see Yo-Yo Ma and The Silk Road Ensemble for the first time (and perhaps even practice tweeting the performance too ;p)

I’ve always wanted to travel the Silk Road, see the mosque at Samarkand and sit on a teahouse balcony in Tashkent.

I’d love to see him again in concert. I’ve only seen him solo, not with the silk road ensemble.

I’m really interested to see how this fusion of cultures works.

Awesome! I’ve never heard anything like this before…

YoYo Ma is one of the most collaborative musicians I know of, he’s worked with a host of other artists to create magnificent work captured in a television series featuring the Bach Suites. It would be pure joy to see him perform in person!

Oh this sounds wonderful! I’ve loved Ma’s music for years and years, but it would be amazing to see him and this ensemble perform live! Fingers crossed!

Thanks for bringing this to my attention, he is brilliant and so enjoyable. Some of my worst “driving in traffic moments” are soothed by his music, coupla CDs in the car. I know, CDs are old fashioned.

One of my favourite pieces of music is Yo-Yo Ma’s rendition of Bach’s Cello Suite.

Would be such a treat to go to his performance — and what a great setting!

You and I haven’t talked music before. I have a degree in voice as well as education. :) I love Yo-Yo Ma.

Oh, I’ve been wanting to buy tickets to this but can’t afford them. The Silk Road album is amazing and I have fond memories of first hearing it on the CBC on my first BC roadtrip shortly after moving here 4 years ago.
