Travel Smart 2011 with Translink
I’ve written about Translink quite a bit, and I have been quite impressed with the various ways in which they are improving their social media presence, individual outreach and overall customer feedback process. And I loved their Travel Smart campaign during 2010.
Translink is now relaunching the campaign but now with a fully dedicated website, Travel Smart, and to encourage my readers in the Lower Mainland to travel smart and remind ourselves of how we coped with street closures during the 2010 Vancouver and Whistler Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games last year, they have offered me a prize to give away as a promotional item for their campaign.
I thought that the best way to start your day would be with a coffee as you take the bus, Skytrain, Canada Line or Seabus, so Translink is giving me a $50 gift card for one lucky reader. I’d be keen to learn if and how you changed your travel behaviour during the Olympics. Did you know that during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, Vancouverites made significant changes to their travel behavior, and reduced vehicle traffic by 36% (data provided by Translink, 2011)? In my case, I didn’t change a thing. I’m 100% reliant on transit and walking.
To gain an additional (thus 2 entries in total) entry into my contest you can post the following text on Twitter:
Tell @Translink & @hummingbird604 how you @travelsmart – $50 voucher to @wavescoffee up for grabs! http://ow.ly/3XwqA
I will draw a random winner from all entries on Wednesday February 22nd at 2pm. Also, not only you can win a gift card for Waves on my contest, Travel Smart has their own contest, where you can win even more stuff (including an iPad!). You should check their contest too.

Nothing beats the Canada Line for getting in and out of downtown. So quick and convenient – and a heck of a lot cheaper than parking!
The Olympics did not change the way I get around…still took transit everywehre
I didn’t really change my travel behaviour too much during the Olympics.
I took the Canada Line and the bus everywhere during the Olympics. Fun times!

I took the bus a lot more during the Olympics but as for a change, two things changed for me during the Olympics – first, I found I walked to a lot more places (something that continues now), and second, I made the committment to bike year round.
I just walked everywhere and avoided taking transit.
I took the Canada Line and the bus for my first time during the games. I have since used both methods.
Canada Line ftw! I live in Richmond so this transit method was super convenient when I went to the events in downtown. Now that I got work in downtown, I will be traveling on the Canada Line at least 5 days a week, definitely beats the alternative of driving in traffic and paying $$ for parking.
I didn’t change anything about my routine either. At the time I was living in East Van and working in North Van. I took transit every day, but thankfully removed from most of the hustle and bustle.
on a daily basis and during the olympics i depend on the expo line to get around the city!
The Olympics did not change the way I get around because I am also 100% reliant on transit and good old fashioned walking!

yea i took transit during the olympics like how i normally travel around!
I didn’t change much except when I went downtown, we walked.
We walked so much during the Olympics, my feet were swollen.
i didnt change my routine much as i take transit to work. i did rely more on transit for my evening jaunts into the DT core … no point trying to drive and find parking.
I didn’t have to change anything during the Olympics – I still took transit everywhere I went and walked whenever possible, just like I always do.
I kept taking transit during the olympics and loved it. So many folks talking to each other, sharing the fun of the games and just enjoying each others company! I sure miss those days last year!!
Committed to transit whether there’s an Olympics or not, so no change for me.
I still took a public transit and walked during the olympic. I don’t have any other mean of transportation anyway. I’m really glad I have a upass. The only difference was that I walked more often in downtown area b/c it was nice to see all the olympic stuff on the streets.
Got rid of my car last February and I’ve been committed to transit during the Olympics and after.
Didn’t change much during the Olympics as I use the Skytrain/Bus frequently.
We didn’t change much. We telecommute so we’re home during the day. When we did go downtown, we took the Skytrain, instead of driving from the suburbs.
the only change was that i left earlier to miss the rush of tourists and possibly left later to take in all the fun when in downtown during the week; i used my monthly pass to help my senior parents go downtown and enjoy the olympic spirit for a bit
I take the #5 to Burrard, then skytrain to Patterson, then #125 to School! And back! Or I walk

While I do have a truck, I do not drive anywhere near downtown. So I’m pretty much reliant on Translink to get me around M-F. So nothing changed for me commute wise during the Olympics.

I changed behaviour, I have a car with free parking at work, I teleworked a few days, walked the other days. Best walk ever seeing people in the streets with flags and clothes from countries all around the world (miss it!)
I’ve been a Westcoast Express rider for years and enjoyed their service during the Olympics. If I changed anything, it was riding the Bombardier streetcar to Granville Island. I wish that had remained.
I started using the Canada Line and now I take it everyday to get to school!
I didn’t change much during the Olympics because my work is very difficult to get to via public transit but my kids spent more time on the bus and we now by monthly passes rather than tickets for them.
I love taking the Canada Line from Richmond to Downtown on the weekend. I have school on Saturdays and taking the Canada Line helps to reduce time and parking cost for me. I usually stay downtown after class to meet up with some friends to catch up with the rest of the week. It’s great to have access to public transit system in BC.
UPDATE – The winner of my giveaway is @TraceyHunt – congratulations!
