VOLO (@BalletBC) Win tickets

Dance has always been an integral part of my life. While my training included contemporary dance, I am now more of a Latin dance specialist (salsa, merengue, tango). Yet, I find myself always drawn again towards ballet, classical dance and contemporary dance. So when Ballet BC told me about their upcoming performances (VOLO, part of their 2011 programme, offering shows through February 17-19th) with 1 Vancouver premiere and 2 world premieres, I was thrilled.

The three performances of VOLO feature a Vancouver premiere and two World premieres plus a special treat with a performance by Guest Principle Artists from Netherlands Dance Theatre, Leslie Telford and Medhi Walerski, dancing all three nights in Jiri Kylian’s Toss of a Dice to music by Dirk Haubrich.

1st Flash, originally choreographed for Netherlands Dance Theatre by Finnish choreographer Jorma Elo to Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in D minor, op. 47, is a work that shows off the dynamic beauty and musicality of Elo. Born in Finland, he is resident choreographer of Boston Ballet and a former member of the Netherlands Dance Theatre, Cullberg Ballet and Finnish National Ballet. The program also features a World premiere by the European choreographer/dancer Medhi Walerski to his own original music. Walerski danced with the Paris Opéra Ballet, Nice Opéra Ballet and the Ballet du Rhin in Mulhouse. A second World premiere is by Canadian choreographer Shawn Hounsell, formerly a dancer with the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and Les Grands Ballets Canadiens. A recipient of the Clifford E. Lee Choreography Award in 1997

Tickets for VOLO can be purchased through Ticketmaster at 604-280-3311 or online at ticketmaster.ca and range in price from $35 -$70 (including HST) with discounts for seniors, students and dance artists.

Ballet BC is providing me with a pair of tickets to give away to a lucky reader. To enter my giveaway I would love to hear when was the last time you went out dancing on the town. If I told you how long it was since my last competitive dance performance you wouldn’t believe it (probably 2008, before I started blogging more intensely). It’s a world I want to come back to. And I am always in awe of contemporary and ballet dancers because they do amazing stuff I am no longer able to do. But I may, if I put in the hours.

I will be drawing a winner on Monday February 14th (Valentine’s Day) at 5pm just before I head out for Valentine’s Day dinner. These tickets could be a nice non-February 14th Valentine’s Day date, as a matter of fact. Or you could also earn an additional entry by tweeting the text below:

Last Saturday night we had salsa lessons from a dinner guest at my friend’s house. We cleared out the living room and learned a few moves. I love dancing and I miss it! We should go sometime!

Wish I could say it was some sort of chic ballroom or sassy salsa but I was last dragged out to go dancing last weekend with my younger sister and her friends, to PostModern! Felt so old (used to party there when it was called something else about a decade ago) but enjoyed one overpriced drink and broke a good sweat before calling it a night and heading home to curl up with a good book. :)

Well, I was a very good dancer at young age, performed in big theaters solo and as part of a group.
Not anymore, lost the ability by not practicing ….sad, ah?
But I will always admire dancers cause I know how much it requires to be a good one.
Will love to win these tickets!!

I’m always dancing in my mind. Does that count?

AnikaJanuary 29th, 2011 at 1:38 pm

Too long ago! It’s one of my favorite things though so you’ve inspired me to make it happen again soon.

The last time I went “out” dancing (the ‘da club’ as they say) was months ago and I don’t even remember it. The last time I danced, however, was two days ago with my dance company!

kmazzFebruary 2nd, 2011 at 1:14 pm

I used to work for a ballet company in NYC and really miss those days. But the last time I went out dancing was too long ago for me to willingly admit. But it was the first year of my marriage.

Last time my wife I went dancing was at the office Christmas party. Does that count? We actually met swing dancing.

Last time I went dancing was on Friday night to some good old house music!

While this isn’t exactly a night out on the town, it is an amazing dance class with an amazing teacher.
I went to a burlesque aerobics dance class a couple of weeks ago with Melody Mangler at the Screaming Chicken Theatrical Society’s studio. Great music, jaw-droppingly talented and beautiful teacher, fun atmosphere full of laughter, and really really challenging.

God, it’s been ages. Last time I went was back in June I believe. Went out with a friend and it was actually a pretty lame night.

Last time I went out dancing was at my wedding about 2 months ago… after our private reception on the beach in Playa del Carmen we took the party to the streets of Quinta Avenida and eventually ended up at the Blue Parrot Beach Club where we danced the night away.

BrendaFebruary 8th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

Aww, does dancing the night away at a wedding at New Year’s count? If I win, this will be a birthday gift to myself!

MichelleFebruary 8th, 2011 at 2:57 pm

The last time I planned on going dancing & actually made it to the dance floor would be.. November 2010. Sad, I know.

Teresa KFebruary 8th, 2011 at 10:14 pm

Jon PaulFebruary 9th, 2011 at 10:33 pm

Went out dancing a couple weekend ago in Victoria to see Topless Gay Love Tekno Party! Such a great band, and me and my honey showed our best moves!

Last time?? Oh .. sadness.. probably in 2002. Being a FT mom and biz owner + having a FT day job, I rarely get out. Ballet BC is something that my daughter & I could enjoy together though as she’s been dancing for 5 yrs now. Happy valentines day!

DerekFebruary 14th, 2011 at 10:51 am

New Years Eve…and I vowed never to go out on that night again, just too crowded, but the music @ 560 was great!

JanineAnnTFebruary 14th, 2011 at 12:20 pm

The last time I went dancing (beyond the crazy lady frolicking around my house style dancing) was not on the town, but on the lava-like rocks of a Thetis Island BC beach. We were barefoot and wild with a band playing til the wee hours. Kids & adults alike would shake it to old classics with a spin with the ocean and mountains of Vancouver Island as our backdrop. Lights from the boats bobbing in the rhythmic ocean joined us in our bouncing beats.

I need to dance again soon!
