Vancouver South African Film Festival (VSAFF) 2011
Several of my friends in Vancouver are South African and I have always had a soft spot for African culture. So when I was contacted by the first-ever Vancouver South African Film Festival (VSAFF) to give away passes to their films/gala, I could not resist.
Vancouver South African Film Festival (VSAFF) is coming to Empire Granville 7 on Jan. 22 and 23. VSAFF is proud to present four feature films and four documentaries that explore the culture, history and politics of South Africa. The VSAFF is a non-profit event organized entirely by volunteers, and all proceeds will go to support the important educational work local charity Education without Borders (EwB) has been doing in the township of Gugulethu, South Africa since 2002. EwB is also 100% volunteer run.
I asked Marc Weber if they were planning the festival will support environmental programs. He told me:
Specifically, we work with a South African non-profit, SEED, and have started a food garden at Fezeka Secondary School. It serves two main purposes: It helps the kids to feed themselves, and has also been incorporated into their curriculum in order to teach them about the environment.
We believe the VSAFF is the first significant festival of South African films held anywhere outside of South Africa. The Lower Mainland is home to more than 60,000 South African expatriates.
A complete list of VSAFF films is at their website.
I have been given 3 pairs of tickets to the opening gala (Saturday, Jan. 22, “Skin” followed by South African food and drinks). To enter my giveaway, all you have to do is drop a comment on this site after checking their website and tell me which film are you looking forward to seeing during the film festival. I will draw 3 winners from all comments entered, and I will be doing the draw on January 20th at 5:00pm.
I am really looking forward to checking some of their films. It’s going to be a great festival.

Hi Hummingbird,
After watching the Trailers, I am really looking forward seeing all of them!!
Especially Skin, Jerusalema and Themba.
Me and all my friends are super excited for this film festival!!
Hope to see you there, Take care.
David
Thanks for the heads up on this film fest. I think Skin looks very good; I’m a big Sophie Okonedo fan!

I am most interested in seeing Sophie Okonedo in ‘Skin’ and the double bill of ‘Afrikapps’, about the Afrikaans language, and ‘Rewind’, about the Truth and Reconciliation commission.
I mean ‘Afrikaaps’ — 2 ‘a’s, like Afrikaans!
I’ve seen Skin and highly recommend it. Very interested to see Afrikaaps and Themba.
They all sound pretty interesting, but I’m drawn to Afrikaaps. Hip hop is typically seen as a urban North American phenomenon, so it’d be nice to see a different take on the genre.

Skin, Themba and Jerusalema sound interesting!
Awesome event!
The opening movie “SKIN” looks like a must-see. The trailer (http://www.skinthemovie.net/site/) looks very promising…
SKIN and Thelma on the top of my list!
I mean, Themba, oops!

Looking at the trailers, they all look good but I’m looking forward to watching “Skin” the most!
I love the list! All the movies look so gooooood! However I was shocked that they’re not screening White Wedding. I saw this movie recently and I was laughing hysterically the whole time. As a huge fan of South African films, this came as a surprise to me, so if you ever get the chance you should definitely check it out. http://whiteweddingmovie.com
I’m looking forward to seeing Themba, which takes place in the EC where I lived for 6 months!
