The magical minute 13 in my workout routine

Despite how hard I’ve been working (at some points, seven days a week, up to 13 hour days, which makes a work week of over 100 hours), I have made a real effort to maintain my physical fitness. As one of my resolutions for the year 2010 was getting fitter (because I promised myself I would be able to play competitive volleyball again), I do cardiovascular activity 3 days a week.

At the same time, I do weight training 3 days a week too. Monitoring my body’s performance throughout has been a lot of fun (I am a data fiend). The interesting part for me is that my cardio routine is a bit of a struggle up until minute 13th. And then, for some reason, I feel like I can climb the Grouse Grind the same way my friend Sebastian Albrecht did (by the way, what an amazing feat!)

Not sure why that is, but it’s been consistent. After minute 13, all my workouts feel way easier. How about you? Do you have the same response as my body does?

I think you’re either experiencing a rather visceral gap between your anaerobic and aerobic systems, or a cutover from one aerobic fuel chain to another. I get something similar on occasion. Here’s an overview:

I actually experience the opposite! I’m super energized and run/walk with ease for the first 15 minutes and the last 15 minutes are horrible!

Raul,
Just wanted to say that doing what you love, like data-keeping/tracking is a wonderful stress transformer.

As “they” say, whatever turns your crank. Recognising and honouring the things that bring you pleasure and then ensuring you work them into your schedule is a key component in undressing the stress.

So, here’s to many more Minute Thirteens!

I’m not into numbers per se, but it’s interesting that you even reference that you’ve been working up to thirteen hour days!

Hmmm. đŸ™‚
