The Coast is Queer #VQFF @queerfilmfest

The thing that attracted me to The Coast is Queer at the Vancouver Queer Film Festival was the fact that all filmmakers were from Vancouver. The thing that I got out of it was a big sense of pride, and a lot of laughs with some of the films. The Coast is Queer is a compilation of short films produced, acted in or directed by GLBT folks.

I found Andrew Jack’s “The Heist” (Canada, 2010) an amazing piece of hip-hop dance that does a great job of storytelling. And yes, the theme is indeed a heist. Aaron Chan’s Stay (Canada, 2010) with Russell Wong as the protagonist who has not come out of the closet is endearing. Waiting 4 Goliath, where two ex-lovers (Florian and Hassan) bump into each other at a café where Florian is waiting for a blind date, was incredibly frustrating and endearing at the same time (Carl Garingan, Canada, 2010).The campy Super Queer (produced by Sakino Sepúlveda) is a satire that combines Wonder Woman, gay bashing and superpowers. Incredibly funny.

I left Tinseltown feeling really good about what I had just seen: a great showcase of local GLBT talent. Good times.
