Vancouver Folk Music Festival 2010

Being my blog as it is, a personal blog with a smörgåsbord of just about anything (Vancouver, my personal life, dance, food/restaurants, theatre and music), it would be a bit irresponsible not to write about the upcoming Vancouver Folk Music Festival. I have written about it in previous years about it, but for some reason, my posts don’t appear in a search, and I am too busy with a few journal articles I need to finish to dig deeper. In previous years, we’ve had amazing acts ranging from Ozomatli to Michael Franti to Delhi2Dublin. This year, some people I know (including Vancouver’s own Jim Byrnes) are in the lineup (check it out). I would be delighted to check out Calexico, Bettye Lavette, and obviously The Malahat Review. El Puchero del Hortelano (Andalusian fusion) will be amazing I am sure.

The Vancouver Folk Music Festival 2010 will take place from July 16th through the 18th. Unfortunately, it looks like I won’t be able to check any of the acts out (as I will be in Parksville, BC). However, thanks to the wonderful folks of VFMF am able to give away a pair of full day passes for a lucky reader and a guest so that you can check a few performances. To enter, write a comment on this blog entry telling me about the last time you saw live music (maybe even a folk band!). You have until Monday July 12th at 11 am PST. I will draw a random winner from all the entries accumulated up to that point. The evening schedule is here and you can buy tickets from the website.

The last concert I saw was Dan Mangan at the CBC studios – he was fantastic! He had a horn and string section, which is not the usual for him. Yeah folk and indie music!!!

The last live band I saw was Thunderheist – the last folk artist was Vancouver’s own Dan Mangan.

The last live music I saw was at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto – the lineup included many great Canadian bands local to TO.

last live music I saw was in some random jazz clubs in New Orleans (though I’ll be damned if I can remember the names of the clubs or musicians now).

The only thing I think would match that is some beautiful folk tunes on a beautiful beach in the sunshine :)

The last Band I saw was Madison Blues Band at The Cottage Bistro, a couple of months ago.

I just saw Hey Ocean and Five Alarm Funk at the Jazz Fest – they both rocked!

The last live music I saw was the Vancouver Opera’s Madama Butterfly, I got to live-tweet the final dress rehearsal (which was incredible!) Other than that, the last live music I saw was in Kingston; haven’t had much of a chance to enjoy the famous West Coast Music Scene here yet – unless free concerts during the Olympics counts?? :)

Oh I do love the Folk Fest!
The last I saw was the Canadian Tenors…great concert!

The last live music show I saw was at Guilt & Company which was a kind of experimental affair with mixed results. Last incredible live music experience was Great Lake Swimmers – so dreamy.

The last live show I saw was the Grand Caribou Opry with Barney Bentall and his gang at the Cultch. Great show, and all proceeds went to Potluck cafe.

The last live music I saw was Bobs and Lolo. :) I could use some grown up music, though they are a fantastic kids band.

The last live music I saw was The Waking Eyes playing in Winnipeg with the symphony orchestra for an amazing free Canada Day concert! Almost got carried away by mosquitos…guess that is a real Canadian experience! :)

Man, I would love to attend, but I’m going to Folk on the Rocks, Yellowknife’s own folk music festival, that weekend! Oh well.

Ah, it’s been too long.. The last live show I saw was Shonen Knife at the Biltmore. Super fun!!

The last time I saw live music was at the Folk Fest with my Pa when he was still alive…

The last concert I saw was Charlie Winston and he was AMAZING! If anyone gets the chance to see him he is so good live! They all look like they’re having so much fun on stage and in turn the audience has even more fun!
I have never been able to go to folk fest because the tickets are usually too expensive for me to go. Sometimes me and my husband try to hang out near by so we can hear the tunes…we also play folk music- so it would be great to get some inspiration next weekend. Love to see the Avett Brothers!

I just saw The Malahat Revue outside of CBC on Wednesday. It was great to see some of my favourite Vancouver artists like Said The Whale and Hannah Georgas, performing together along with Jeremy Fisher and Aidan Knight They put on a great show, and I’m expecting an awesome performance from them at folk fest.

Last live music I saw was The Fugitives (Vancouver’s own!) at The Biltmore.

Mesmerizing and superbly talented band.

The last gig I went to was The Temper Trap at The Commodore (amazing!) and the last folk music gig I went to was Mumford & Sons (also another stunning performance!)

I was lucky enough to see Dan Mangan play in Trafalgar Square this past Canada Day in London, England! He was fantastic! Great to see a BC boy abroad, hope to catch him here in Vancouver soon.

The last music show I saw was Tool, a spectacular visual show. This has been the summer of live music with DJ shows, jazz festival bands etc. I haven’t had this much music fun in years.

Last show I saw was Delorean at the Biltmore – it was a great show with lots of silly dancing. :) I love shows and I’d love to see the Avett Brothers and Said the Whale at the Festival.

Like most commenters here, the last live music I saw was Dan Mangan. This was during the Olympics — he and the poet Shane Koyczan were performing on the sidewalk near Granville. A crowd gathered around them, of course. The memory of that makes me smile. :)

The last time I saw a live performance was during the Jazz Festival and I truly enjoyed it.

We’ve just moved to Vancouver from Calgary, and after spending countless blissful hours camped out at the Calgary Folk Music Festival, it feels wrong not to attend a folk fest in the summer.
The last live music I saw was on Friday, we spent the evening at Kino Cafe with the very enjoyable Flamenca Alcala.
