Guest post: @HenryJue’s Ride to Conquer Cancer

I met Henry Jue on Twitter a few months ago and recently found out that he was doing the Ride to Conquer Cancer. I thought my friend Greg was also doing the RCC, but not sure. He might be doing the Underwear Affair (also a fundraiser for cancer). My mind is drawing a blank. At any rate, I digress. I am, as you know, someone who has a big stake in cancer fundraising. I have Blogathoned 2 years in a row for the BC Cancer Foundation, and I have lost many family members to the terrible disease. I asked Henry to write a guest post on my site about his charity and here it is.

The Ride To Conquer Cancer is a epic two day bike ride from here down to Seattle happening on June 19-20. We’ll be riding down and spending the night of the 19th at a camp that they are setting up at around the halfway point. Upon arrival in Seattle on the 20th, there will be a huge celebration party, after which we will return to Vancouver (on cars, as our legs will probably be jelly by then).

It’s not a ride just for cyclists or athletes. It’s a ride for everyone who has been affected by cancer in some way, from those who have friends or family who are currently or who have battled cancer, to those who have fought cancer themselves. Riders of all strengths and backgrounds will be coming together both to raise funds for the BC Cancer Foundation, and to show our support for cancer patients and supporters everywhere.

Cancer has been something that has really come to the forefront of my life in the past three years. It all started when my father was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Back then, cancer was still something that, in my mind, wasn’t really a huge issue to me. It actually took a while to actually sink in what this all meant. Over the next few years, I found that many of my friends had family who were also battling cancer as well and it was something that brought us together. I discovered that one of my best friends is a survivor. And sadly, my grandmother passed away as she lost her battle with lung cancer. As I found more and more people around me who were affected by cancer, I became increasingly aware of how prevalent this really is. This year, I finally decided to stop whining about everything and try to make a change, and the Ride to Conquer Cancer is the main way that I am trying to do so (so far). (I’ve also written a post on why I’m doing the Ride that you may have already read here)

So every rider must raise at least $2,500 in order to ride, every single penny of which goes directly to the BC Cancer Foundation. So far I have raised just ~$2,000 (the value on my fundraising pages is not including ~$400 in cheques which are being processed by hand at the office). In order to facilitate fundraising, I have a fundraising page on the Ride To Conquer Cancer website which can be found here. Also, I have set up a silent auction on my blog here.
