Raul:

My liveblog of Marc Gobé starts now

We are clearly seeing a generational gap that will clearly have an impact. Gobé talks about a new media, a new technology platform.

1. Generational gap

In his first book, Gobé talks about the differences in generations. 81 million born between 1950-64 – a generation that came out at a time of explosive economic growth. It was a transformation – endless opportunities – we became – sometimes we couldn’t realize where the stuff was coming from and where it was going.

How do you recognize a baby-boomer, like me? We are closest to the exit

The second generation is Generation X – this generation was so small that was dwarfed by baby boomers. Their values (baby boomers) sprawled over two generations.

Brandbarians at the gate (Baby boomers 81 million 1946/64, Gen x 46 Million 1965/76 and Gen y 77 Million).

The two generations that Gobé is focusing on – the baby boomers – the “US” generation – own the world. “We own the world”. The world was our playground.

The second is the X generation – the “I” generation – they are here to fix the world – the “I” generation – the attitude there is to fix something that had been broken.

The Y is the “all” generation – connect the world.  Zuckerberg is 26 year old.

“XY” – how do they define themselves – far from “boomers” xY” is moving from utopia to reality. Gobé makes a point – it’s a generation cynical of brands & looking for purpose.

The same way television is creating audiences – what we want is create audiences for the content. The same type of audience that will return to see more. The difference is that the audience will be participating, is total engagement, it will transform itself, it will always happen if the audience can participate in the content.

Gobé believes that brands will start believing in creating their own content (product placement is going to be a lot more interactive and a lot more welcome and engaging). What is fascinating is that — revolutionary emotional branding ideas.

1. Distance between brands and people is collapsing.
In the old way of ‘brand’, the brand was bigger – there will be a collapse of people and brand – the distance is smaller – anything that stops the people and the brand to come together will be reduced. Zappos is the best example – the culture is the brand.

2. Your corporate culture is your powerful asset

Gobé didn’t really talk about this in his talk.

3.  Flat organizations
The pyramidal model is over.  The social economy is horizontal. “Joe Jimenez” – the feedback you can get in a virtual environment can be more detailed, much richer. You can do it yourself, you can’t wait.

In conclusion – it’s an Emotional Branding perfect storm – something is going to change – consumers are going to be talking to each other. If they’re not part of this conversation, they are going to miss out. Not only it’s here, but still there’s a lot of people who don’t believe it. Everybody is continuing to do their old way.

Raul:

1. Empowered consumers – have heightened expectation levels, and the ability to leverage a collective and influential voice

2. New level of reality – branding needs to understand the new concept of design, science and planet

3. New media ecosystem
- new media implies a shift in mindset. Brands need to stop pushing or selectively listening to be part of the conversation

4. Size doesn’t matter -
it allows the little guy to get scale almost instantaneously *P&G McDonald)

5. Leadership redefined –
power through influence is proving to be the new success criteria

Gobé – how do you create loyalty? it’s really important. Create trust. Do you trust people you don’t know? You don’t. You trust people that you know. The point Gobé was making – people don’t want to engage with faceless corporations but to engage with people - the notion of trust that needs to be created. Because a lot of conversation is going on, and if you really trust a brand,  if you know that you have a voice on how this brand is going to behave, it creates a degree of loyalty that you can have.

Gobé believes that engagement through social media, if well done, is the biggest avenue to create renewed engagement of trust to get loyalty – it’s really tough.

The experience that Gobé has had – at first he said “I’m not going to follow back anyone”. Then he realized that among the 1,300 some people don’t tweet at all. His brain picks what is relevant to his survival.
