Recommend an inexpensive camera for less than 150

a canon camera

I used to have three digital cameras but two of them are now defunct. The other one, I gave to my Mom. I was looking online and asked on Twitter whether people could recommend a camera for around $100. I decided to increase this to up to $ 150. Let me explain the rationale behind my camera needs (and before you even go there, no, I’m not buying myself a digital SLR).

My blogging itself does not bring me income. I do it because I love it. But I do eat out a lot, and I feel that lately, the restaurants where I have eaten have offered excellent food that would look oh-so-much-better on my blog if I had a nicer camera.

I am, however, bound by said problem that I have mentioned repeatedly on my blog (the fact that I have a crushing debt and I am very good with my finances – I run a tight ship). I am willing to part with up to $150 to get a reasonable camera. So, I’m taking any and all advice in here. And why here? Because Twitter has very fickle memory, and I want a permanent record! So, if you suggested something on Twitter, pretty please, suggest it here too on my blog?

Thanks!

I’ve had/used one of these for a couple of years and it’s been great. Easy to use and reliable.

In that price range I would recommend looking at Canon Powershots, Nikon Coolpix or even the Olympus cameras :)

Usually at that price range they have similar specs. Go to LondonDrugs and ask their camera peeps! Remember though if you’re looking to spend $150, when sales people look for products that are to your budget, they never seem to factor in tax ;)

Also look for things that use SD (or SDHC) memory. Unless of course you like Sony’s Memory sticks or those silly tiny xD memory cards or whatever lol

This might be a speck more, but it dominates the subcompact market – Canon SD780 @$179 http://is.gd/bCU1b

unfortunately no cameras for $150 in 2010 will get you great pics in low light for restaurant food photos (unless you enjoy :-) disrupting the whole restaurant using the awful flash on a point and shoot). for $150 at iso 400 or 800, you will get grainy photos without flash but they will still be far better than an iPhone! So for $150 any Canon camera will be great but grainey, Casio is good also can’t recommend Sony because of their ridiculous memory sticks. I like Ken Rockwell’s recommendation of a $US 95 refurbished A1000is:

If you are really serious about great low light food photos without disruptive flash then unfortunately you’ll have to buy a DSLR which is beyond your price range (cheapest is $450 including lens + SD card + tax)

At that price, an inexpensive Canon should do you. No cheap P&S is very good in low-light, but they’ll all beat the iPhone camera. :)

one last thought, raul, you have a great network, maybe a friend or a friend of a friend can give you a $150 old dslr deal, worth asking :-) !

congrats on your blogging anniversary!

For sure look at getting a second hand Canon DSLR!!! Then get yourself a 50mm lens and you will be able to get some good low light shots. Good Luck – and remember a good camera is a GREAT investment in your WHOLE life – not just blogging.

Also – you will never get teh great shots your want from apoint and shoot. They can do alright for landscape and scenery etc. But when u need low light OR your subjects are people, you need a DSLR.
