The TechItAway challenge for @HamberTech
A few days ago, I was invited by Nicole Grima on behalf of Best Buy Canada to mentor a group of high-school students on how to use the power of social media to spread their message. Eric Hamber Secondary School is one of three schools in the Vancouver School Board District that were participating in this program, where three renowned bloggers in Vancouver would be mentoring a school each one to help them spread their message.
This is part of a city-wide, one time initiative sponsored by Best Buy as part of their program to give back to the community, whereby secondary Schools in Vancouver will take part in a one day recycling drive on April 22, 2010 (Earth Day).
The event is called ‘Tech It Away’ as the initiative is geared towards collecting unwanted electronics – from fax machines to DVD players to batteries – for recycling and/or safe disposal. The schools are competing against each other to collect the most items – and the winning school will be awarded an additional $2,000 from Best Buy to fund an eco-friendly school project.
My good friends Gillian Shaw and Rebecca Bollwitt are mentoring the other two schools, where I spoke to the students of Eric Hamber Secondary School. I shared with the President of the Environmental Club at Eric Hamber and a few other students what little I know about the power of social media. Now, please do help them out if you so choose. And more importantly, if you have unwanted electronics, please do consider dropping them off on April 22nd (my blogiversary and Earth Day) at Eric Hamber. Drop off your e-waste @ 5025 Willow St, Vancouver Apr 21-22 before school 8:00-8:30 or after 3:00-3:30 Apr 22 8:00am-4:00pm. It’s close to Queen Elizabeth Park.
