Opening of Pride House Vancouver 2010
I had to juggle my teaching with an invite I had to the opening of the Pride House on Davie and Bute (hosted by Qmunity). I’ve covered GLBT issues on my blog before, quite frequently. This topic is particularly near and dear to me as I firmly believe that there is no place for segregation and stigma/discrimination of athletes because of their sexual orientation. Sadly, many athletes don’t seem to have the support network to be able to come out and be themselves freely.
The great thing about Pride House is that it will provide a safe environment for GLBT and GLBT-friendly athletes to be themselves, without anyone judging them. The pavilion’s purposes include highlighting a few fantastic athletes who have already come out and the welcoming atmosphere that we breathe in Vancouver. There’s also a ton of events (see the schedule here).
I bumped into numerous friends, including Blair Smith, Marc Smith, Sean Horlor, councillor Ellen Woodsworth (I bump into Ellen at many events, given that I do coverage of a lot of stuff), and a few others. Thanks to Jennifer Breakspear for inviting me to the event, and I’m so glad I could juggle everything I had to do yesterday. I’ll be swinging by the Pride House during the Olympics, that’s for sure.
The rest of my Flickr photo set is here.
