On shared values and beliefs

I have conducted research on environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs) for over a decade. I have studied the mobilization strategies and tactics that these ENGOs use and I have criticized the literature that argues that transnational networks of ENGOs are unified by their sharing of values and beliefs. Interestingly enough, this weekend I had a chance to reflect on this topic. From an empirical research standpoint, it’s hard to find and present compelling evidence that two people (or two organizations) share the same values and beliefs. Most of my research has found coalition-building a rather strategic process (e.g. organizations that come together because they have a joint objective or goal).

But when I think of myself and my friends, I find that the glue that binds us together, the link that strengthens our bond is precisely, a sharing of common values and beliefs. Perhaps not all of them, and not all the time, but we share at least a core. My friends and I (and in particular, my close friends) share the common belief (and value) that friendships must be cultivated and worked on. That spending quality time with friends is important.

What do you think? Food for thought for a Monday morning…

Friendships must be cultivated like all relationships; when we pay them no mind, we drift so quickly. Marriages are the same – leave connection too long and suddenly you’re strangers; it doesn’t take long.
