Devote one day to organization and cleanup

It's all gotta go, before version

I think one of the things I enjoy the most when people read my blog is receiving feedback on stuff that I write and that people find useful. One of the elements I have incorporated on my site is a list of productivity tips. Short little snippets of suggestions on how to be more productive. But I don’t just list them as though they are abstract ideas. I list here what I do to be more productive, in a “this is how I do it, so I hope it’ll work for you too” kind of way.

While this week has been rather slow for my blogging, my client work, teaching and research productivity have been through the roof. One of the productivity elements I have assimilated into my work and personal life is to get rid of the Box of Miscellaneous Stuff (BMS). Another element I’ve incorporated is to devote one day (in full or at least a few hours) to clean up my desk/office/home. That way, as the month begins, I have different challenges, and cleaning up and organizing is not one of them. I start the month with a clean slate.

I did that a few weeks back with my apartment, and as I sit here at my office at The Network Hub listening to Styx and Friendly Fires, I’m cleaning up my desk, filing up stuff, creating labels for my folders, sorting supplies, organizing the monthly workload and schedule. Tomorrow is November 1st, and I will have a clean slate (and an organized office and home).

Indeed. I also recommend quickly doing as many jobs/tasks as you can, that you have put off for some time. I usually do that for New Years, and it’s way better than trying to do a NY resolution. It’s good feng sui: it gives you more energy to do other things. I have no idea why. I just had an old home movie transferred to DVD last week (which I have been meaning to do for the last 10 years), and it gave me such a lift. Next put off task, getting my carpet cleaned…

you’re so organized and a complete superstar in organizing our preventable meetup. Great fun!

I should really clean my desk too at work…maybe that’s a friday job this week.

I can’t believe it’s nov 1.
