The Hope in Shadows 2010 Calendar

I’ve always been passionate about causes associated poverty, homelessness, etc. with the Downtown East Side, and I had written about the Hope In Shadows 2009 Calendar, but as I was making my way out of Waterfront Skytrain Station, I realized that the 2010 calendar is already out. And I had no cash on me, so I couldn’t buy my 2010 calendar right there and then, from a vendor.

For those of you who don’t know what the Hope in Shadows Calendar is, here is some information, taken from their website.

Hope in Shadows is an empowerment and employment initiative that engages residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

The annual Hope in Shadows photography contest — which began in 2003 — gives Downtown Eastside residents the opportunity to portray their community through their own eyes. The winning photographs are exhibited annually and have been showcased in galleries throughout the province. Deeply compelling, these black and white images are a view to the humanity and spirit of a community that is often known only for its struggles.

A selection of the contest’s best images is featured in the annual Hope in Shadows calendar which is sold on the streets of Vancouver by homeless and low-income vendors. Free training and support are provided to those interested in managing their own micro-business.

Our Mission
Hope in Shadows creates positive social change for people and communities impacted by poverty and marginalization.

You can view some of the great photos taken in the calendar in their Flickr stream. The great thing I’ve noticed is that Pivot Legal Society and Hope In Shadows Inc. have taken up the social media platforms, so you can find them on Facebook and Twitter. You can also find their YouTube channel here.

Please consider supporting this worthy cause by purchasing a 2010 Calendar. Thank you.
