My Diwali celebration
My very good friend B.S. and her husband J.J. invited us last night to celebrate Diwali. This has been a tradition in our group of friends for the past few years, although last year, she didn’t organize it. But she was beaming last night and really happy that she did get to do yet another Diwali celebration for her closest friends.
The great thing is that, since we have now a very solid, core group of friends, we get to see most of them at these key, milestone celebrations. Our friends HZ and CS and their little daughter were there too, which was a very pleasant surprise as I thought I wouldn’t see them for the next 2.5 months (wow, that’s a heck of a long time).
B.S. prepared several of my favorite Indian dishes, including butter chicken, samosas, LOTS of traditional Indian sweets, and mango lassi (which is my favoritest drink – yes, despite my lactose intolerancy).
Overall, I had a great time as I also got to see my friends JH, SF and AF, who are also common friend with BS and JJ. I can’t really complain, although we did miss ML who was out with her family for her sister’s birthday celebration. In general, what I have found is that our core group of friends really looks forward to these milestones. Our next group gathering will be definitely Halloween or maybe New Year’s, but it should be a total blast.
For those curious as to what Diwali is, from the Wikipedia entry:
Diwali or Dīpāvali[1] (Sanskrit: दीपावलि: a row of lamps[2]) is a significant festival in Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, and Jainism, and an official holiday in India.[3] Adherents of these religions celebrate Diwali as the Festival of Lights. They light diyas—cotton string wicks inserted in small clay pots filled with oil—to signify victory of good over the evil within an individual.
