Donating my books to non-profit reading rooms/libraries in need

Like any good academic geek, I have a gazillion plus more books in my personal library (at home). I have read all of them and I think it’s important for me to give back to the community as well. I bought pretty much all these books with my own cash, so I feel perfectly comfortable giving them away (i.e. I’m not re-gifting books that have been gifts to me). Others may have come to me for book reviews for journals or as sample books for review for my undergraduate courses. I do feel that it’s ok for me to give those away as well for libraries (grossly underfunded).

Laura recommended looking at non-profits and it occurred to me that perhaps I should distribute my book donations as well to charitable organizations. I am a firm believer in reading rooms. Even if the non-profit can’t afford a huge amount of money for reading materials, I am pretty sure many of them have a dedicated area (however small) for books/magazines/etc.

I ask Vancouver/Lower Mainland readers of my blog – do you know of any local non-profits that have reading rooms/libraries that could benefit from my books donations? If so, please drop a comment on this post. Thanks! (PS – hat tips to Patricia and Laura who recommended VPL and the non-profits).

About 9 years ago I donated a few hundred books to UNBC. I think at the time they were working on beefing up their newish library. I gave them a list of books I had and they picked what they wanted. They paid for shipping and gave me a receipt for my taxes. You could give them a try.

The ironic thing is I have tried to donate books in the past. No one wants them, book stores don’t want them, the library don’t want anything more than 2 years old. Some of these books cost and arm and a leg. Dunno what to do and don’t wanna throw them away or recycle them….

Try YouthCo … they used to have a reading/movie/music room. Not sure if they still do, but certainly a very worthy group if they do :-)
