Bowen Island Geek Road Trip (daytrip)

I had read a few times that friends of mine have been doing day-long trips to Bowen Island and despite the fact that Robert Ballantyne lives there (and he is a good friend of mine) I haven’t really even made an effort to come visit him (James Glave also lives there and I seriously think I should make a day trip).

I haven’t really taken much time off except for my recent visit to Salt Spring Island and Sidney by the Sea. Therefore, I really would like to do a day trip to Bowen Island. I figured I’d throw the idea out there since Lynne, Terra and Minna have also mentioned they would be interested.

The price for the roundtrip water taxi to Bowen Island is $25 which is pretty affordable. I would ask JT if he wants to join me but I know he will probably decline the invite, so I’m extending it to the Vancouver community. Geek Road Trip anyone?

Could you be a bit more specific about date/time? My friend Heather Haley lives there, could organize a poetry salon or something if we were going over.

Pick a day when I’m on Bowen, and I’d be pleased to provide island transportation and be a tour guide (but not real estate agent!). There are lots of bloggers and twitterers here who’d like to meet such famous or notorious mainlanders. Keep in mind that island-time is a bit more sluggish than in the city, and you should allow lots of extra time for everything. The only appointment that islanders attend to rigorously is the last ferry/water-taxi of the day.

As Robert mention, you have to live life by the ferry/water-taxi schedule which is really annoying when you want to get to bowen or head back to the mainland.

Snug cove has all the tourists, I’ve heard there are amazing hiking trails though I haven’t be on any other then hiking/house back riding around my dad’s place.

@Kimm, When folks arrive on Bowen, either by water taxi or ferry, they arrive in Crippen Provincial Park. Low-level walking in the park includes an easy circuit of Killarney Lake. For people who like mountains, Mt. Gardner at 727 m is about 1/2 the height of the big hills on the east side of Howe Sound; and there are excellent views from the helicopter pads by the antennas on the lesser peak. That mountain has trails all over it. I know most, so ask me for routes. http://howesound.wordpress.com/2007/10/05/view-from-mt-gardner-bowen-island/

And there are lots of beaches – some that are offered to the tourists, and lots that have public access known to the locals.

About leaving: the last ferry sailing to the mainland is at 10:10 PM.

If you are not bringing a vehicle, then the last public transportation is the water taxi at 11:15 PM Sunday to Thursday, and 12:15 PM on Friday and Saturday. http://www.cormorantwatertaxi.com/

Id be up for heading to Bowen. We’ve briefly been there but definitely would want to explore more of the island! I love walks/hikes and heard Bowen is great for it.

@Robert, crippen provincial park is off to the side of the ferry/snug cove but you don’t arrive in the provincial park. I have a place up on bowen though I only get a chance to head up every few months to visit family who also live there.
