What I really have gotten out of social media: friends

I was having a great chat with Air and Derek, Arieanna and Ianiv as we were gathered for the baby shower, and I mentioned to them that I was fascinated by the fact that we were just normal people, normal friends hanging out but that we just met through our involvement in social media and blogging.

I’m not sure if I found it so amazing because I was absolutely knocked-out due to sleep-deprivation (it was after all a few hours after I had finished Blogathon) or simply because I see the simplicity and beauty of it all. I’m very close to Derek and Airdrie, as I am to John and Stacie Biehler, as I am to Ianiv and Arieanna Schweber, as I am to Rebecca and John Bollwitt, and the list goes on (Colleen, Tanya, Gus, Russ, Lorraine, April, Karen, Duane, etc.) I mean, we are good friends, we just *happened* to have met through the internet.

Maybe this is not a revelation to anyone, but I for one salute the very medium that has enabled me to build new friendships. My circle of friendships hasn’t gotten smaller, it’s gotten bigger. And we do EXACTLY the same things that other people do. We attend parties. We have dinner and drinks out. We go shopping together. Just like the rest of the world. We just may tweet about it. Or post it to Flickr ;)

So true, Raul. So many of my friends including you, I met because of The Bloggers Meetup Group and then got to know through their blogs and Twitter. From there it moved to the “real” world. Social Media allows me to stay connected to you all even when I can’t make an event. You are all part of my life on a daily bases. I am very grateful for that.

I’ve met so many like minded people online. In particular I’ve met so many moms that, while I can’t always meet up with in person, share many of my parenthood experiences. They have advice, humour and an e-ear to listen.
