My stress levels are through the roof :)

You probably think I’ve gone 100% nuts when the title of my post says that my stress levels are through the roof, yet I end the sentence with a smile emoticon. Well, truth be told, they are. Summer is a busy season for me. Business development and proposal writing for my consultancy practices (both of them, environmental and social media), writing (academic research and blogging), and a number of other things that need to be dealt with. But you know what? I have learned that the best thing I can do is to just take things ONE AT A TIME. Do the best I can do with my tools, skills and abilities.

Today, Michael Kwan (Beyond the Rhetoric) wrote a post showcasing other bloggers/writers/freelancers and the topic was stress. I had planned to write this post a while ago, but Michael had already been kind enough to showcase me on his blog a few times so I figured this time I’d go the reverse route, and link to my current situation.

I am, in all senses of the world, a warrior. I am someone who is not easily defeated, someone who can take challenges on and tackled them directly. Last night, I commented that I was almost on the verge of tears, and a number of my friends in my social networks reached out to me to comfort me and provide support. The same happened with family members. This mobilization of people around me reminded me of how lucky I am. As I mentioned on Facebook:

Raul realizes today and every day how much he is loved and supported by his friends, family. And is having a VERY productive day that started at 6:00am (for those keeping score at home, I went to bed at 1:30am last night). Cheers to productivity and to love! :)

I just had a couple of very productive meetings and received word about some potential additional client work which definitely put me in a VERY, very happy mood. I think the most important thing I can think about right now is how to best move forward with my research, my teaching, my consulting and in general, maintaining a good balance. I think I’m on the right track.

And, on YOUR side, how are YOU doing? Are you dealing with stress? If so, how are you coping with it?

Thanks for the link!

Regarding stress, you can probably tell by some of my blog posts that I am always working to find that delicate balance between life and work. As a freelancer, I am (potentially) always on the clock. In this way, I have to have the work ethic to work when I need to do so, but I also need to know when to say no and step away.

That’s how I de-stress, mostly. Just step away. That’s why I don’t do seven-day work weeks anymore. Hobbies and other healthy diversions are a good way to de-stress, since they can get your mind off of the things that are causing you stress.

Lots of yoga, surfing, and friends always helps.

It’s hard to find time for yourself as a blogger, or someone who likes being on Twitter, Flickr, MSN, you name it!

I think finding offline time is important, although I think you already do that sometimes :)
