What are your weekend plans?

I am lucky to live in one of the prettiest cities in the world. Vancouver’s weather may be rainy 80-90% of the year, but when it’s sunny, it’s sunny! Right now I think I’m even willing to say that I’m up for a tiny bit of rain to cool us off! At any rate, tomorrow is LatinCouver’s launch party and Sunday I am going to a BBQ organized by The Lazy Gourmet (a restaurant that uses OceanWise-approved fish). Then, Sunday evening I have my usual and traditional JT time. But I think I’m going to have to work all weekend regardless. What I plan to do is not to allow myself to be double or triple-booked again. Some of my good friends are going on holiday this week and that’s kind of fun. Others are already on holiday, and overall, it looks like people are having a good time.

Now, on to YOU… what are YOU doing this weekend?

I just bought an Xbox 360, so my weekend is going to be spent playing John Woo’s Stranglehold. I may make an appearance on the beach, and I’ll definitely be playing some badminton in West Vancouver. Good times.

Nothing whatsoever, if I can help it.

Oh, who am I kidding? Catching up on work that should have been done last week, of course.

Tomorrow we might hit up Diez Vista at Buntzen Lake for a 6 hour hike. We’ve been invited to some get together at Wreck Beach during the day as well.

Sunday I hope to go to the Vancouver Zoo with my camera in hand! Hopefully the weather isn’t horribly hot out that way. Supposed to cool down a bit and cloud over by then.

About that comment, “Vancouver’s weather may be rainy 80-90% of the year.” Well, we do live in a rain forest, so to maintain that biome, we need some precipitation. But, not 80-90% of the time.

From early July we often experience such a drought that forest fires are a problem. Actually, the summers here are very sunny.

I have come to recognize 3 seasons. I call the Dark Season the period beginning somewhere in late October when the storm track moves south and our region becomes a wet battleground between the Southern Highs and the Northern Lows. The good part about this is that in the mountains lots of the resulting precipitation is in the form of snow. We need the snowpack for Vancouver’s water, and many of us like to play in the snow. Having lived in Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg, I refer to our winter as a ‘toy winter.’ It is seldom cold enough to hurt.

The Dark Season usually end around Valentine’s Day. That’s the beginning of what I call ‘Spring.’ The days are longer, there is much less precip, the snow lingers on the upper slopes, the fruit trees bloom in town, people start working in their gardens and backcountry skiers and snowshoers are harvesting the spring corn snow.

The 3rd season is our idyllic summer. Often it’s hot in urban areas, but the cooler beaches and mountains are ridiculously close by.
