A dose of lunacy II: Emergency rooms only open from 8am to 8pm
My good friend Monica Hamburg writes, as I’ve mentioned before on my blog, a really funny site called “Your Dose of Lunacy“. Seriously, I have no clue how she comes across so many wacky things. Well, it seems this one is destined for her blog: an emergency room that allows you to only have an emergency between the rather accomodating hours of 8:00am to 8:00pm. Yes, this is the hospital that is nearest to me, so should I have an emergency at say, 10:00pm, I might need to be transported to St. Paul’s Hospital. I remember walking around my neighbourhood and wondering “… hmmm… I so hope I will never need to use this hospital!”. Anyone have ideas as to why this emergency room is only open at those hours?

there was a big change a few years ago when our dear government decided that it’s spending too much money on sick people. lots of emergency rooms got closed. which is really too bad. smaller hospitals have a greater tendency to treat you like a human when you come in through the doors doubled over with pain, and treat you quicker, too.
i went to emerg a few times with what later turned out to be kidney stones – one of the most severe forms of pain there is. in the big hospitals, they kept me there for hours and the stone (and the pain) passed before they even had a clue. in a smaller hospital, they had me on morphine within 1/2 hour.

It is worth the extra time to somehow make it to St. Paul’s. That hospital has an amazing culture of truly caring for people and treating them well. I understand that there is a plan to close St. P’s and combine it with another flesh factory elsewhere. Hearing that made me very disappointed. Can that culture of caring – that I found in EVERY section of that hospital that I was required to visit – translate to the new combined facility. From what I know about corporate mergers, I doubt it. West Enders: create a movement to halt the destruction of St. P’s. It is a valuable part of the community.
I know St Paul’s is also in the Providence group with MSJ, but surely VGH is closer? A previous sign even directed people to VGH after hours.

I guess it depends which direction you’re coming from. But in my recollection, this particular hospital has always had a daytime-only emergency room. At least it did the one time I visited for lip stitches after I plowed my bicycle into a parked car in 1992. I’m not exactly sure why, if emergency hours are going to be limited, they wouldn’t be overnight instead of during the day, since there are lots of other options (clinics, etc.) during business hours.

I have no brilliant words about why the hospital is only open until 8pm, but it’s somewhat in line with the 24hr places that are inexplicably closed for a few hours late at the night…
Really appreciate the mention, Raul!
