Vancouver Opera: Salome (Opening Night)
I’m here at the Vancouver Opera with my fellow bloggers Rebecca, Tanya, Tris and Kimli. It’s my first time actually live-blogging my experience at the opera, but I’ve previously written a review of Rigoletto and did a video-review of Carmen (the dress rehearsal, which is the actual week before the opening night).
The previous experiences I have had at the Vancouver Opera have been always fantastic and I expect this one to be the same.
My fellow bloggers also have their posts up – Tanya – Rebecca – Tris – Kimli -
Salome is situated in Galilee, a region in Judea. As someone who was raised Catholic, I remember the name Salome being tossed around during church school, but I wasn’t really very familiar with the history behind it. I only remembered that she was the cause of death of John the Baptist (who baptized Jesus Christ). Therefore, I always associated the name Salome with evil. From the program:
“According to the Jewish Antiquities of Flavius Josephus, Salome was the daughter of Herodias and stepdaughter of Herod Antipas, Tetrarch of Galilee. … After Salome danced before him and his guests at a festival, however, he swore to give her whatever she asked. Prompted by Herodias, the girl demanded the head of John The Baptist on a platter, and the unwilling Herod was forced by his oath to comply”
It doesn’t seem as though my memories were wrong… oh, evil Salome!
I’ll be writing a review of the performance later tonight or tomorrow morning for your reading pleasure.

Looking forward to it! I haven’t been to the Opera yet in Vancouver but it sounds interesting. With all of this blogger coverage I hope they’ve been able to get a younger crowd out to it.
They should do the same with the symphonies!

Salome was the first opera I ever saw, about 20 yrs ago in the QE Theatre. I hope you had a fabulous evening, and I’m so pleased to see the way my social media pals have really promoted the opera!
