Compatible Partners – the same-sex, new venture of eHarmony

A few months back, I remember having a Twitter conversation with Laura regarding eHarmony and their heterosexual-only policies. Several people had commented that these policies might have been the result of extreme beliefs that do not espouse equal rights for heterosexual and non-heterosexual individuals. But recently, I learned about the deployment of Compatible Partners. While I in no way am endorsing eHarmony (until I try any of their services, and even then, I will need to know more), I was pleased that at least, they are now offering service for same-sex couples. I am also pleased to see that the visuals are actually very positive depictions of relationships amongst same-sex partners. Love is love anywhere, people. Learn to embrace it.

Very interesting to see that they have implemented this.

I fear that this venture was prompted by public pressure and not true acceptance of gay couples on eHarmony’s part, but it’s a step in the right direction. 6 months of free membership is a pretty good signup bonus too… I’ll pass this along to my sister who might like to make use of the offer! Thanks for the link by the way :)

I wouldn’t be too pleased with eHarmony, Raul. They didn’t create “Compatible Partners” out of any belief that homosexuality is acceptable to them – they did it because they were being sued for discrimination and them offering a same-sex dating site was part of the legal settlement. As for the comment that their heterosexual-only policies “might have been the result of extreme beliefs that do not espouse equal rights for heterosexual and non-heterosexual individuals” – there’s no “might” about it:

“From the company’s emergence in 2000, when they first marketed their matchmaking services primarily to fellow Christian websites, Warren credited much of their early ascent to his relationship with evangelical group Focus on the Family and its founder James Dobson. Inevitably, eHarmony’s growing pains put strain on that relationship, and in 2005, Warren broke from Dobson and Focus on the Family. The break, however, did not signal any change in the company’s policy of exclusively heterosexual match-ups.” (Source: http://www.365gay.com/living/eharmony-now-loves-gay-people-really/

The algorithm CP uses to match men is pathetic. An “urban snob” whose passions include the arts, good food and wine, sculling, etc., I have been matched with good ole boys from small towns who claim “trucks” as their main passion or “bingo and sports” as their main leisure activities. Don’t waste your money; I can’t imagine they’re happy either getting matched with an esthete easterner like me.
