Liveblogging FearlessCity talks at Northern Voice 2009
Irwin Oostindie is introducing the 55 min long session (I can’t stay for all of it so I’m just going to stay until 1:30pm). He is explaining what the FC program does. The characterization of the Downtown East Side (DTES) – “the four blocks of hell”. This project is about inclusive, social health programmes. Somehow the DTES residents lack impact over the services (public policy, health, poverty alleviation, etc.) – Global TV – how the MSM reconstructed the story of the DTES – “only IV users, drug using population” – ignoring the fact that 80-90% doesn’t fit the demographic representation of the drug user, etc.
FC is a project that includes the resident in the representation of their own life. It’s a deeper window into the neighbourhood, allowing the residents to represent themselves. The objective is to have an infrastructure so that the DTES residents can project their stories in public screens, in public spaces. Train people with the equipment and then push it to screen environments. Those may be places like Robson, Granville, etc.
