Five days into Facebook…
Just a quick post to let people know that yeah, maybe my dislike for the Crackbook wasn’t all that justified, but I’ve learned a lot in the past week.
Facebook allowed me to re-connect with friends that I met when I did my PhD, friends and colleagues who are actually scholars in various different countries and universities. Particularly it helped me learn about potential tenure-stream positions and conferences I wasn’t aware of.
All in all, I haven’t spent as much time on Facebook as I expected to, and it’s going well. I don’t plan to “friend” everyone simply because well, I DO want to keep the Facebook thing a bit low key.
What do YOU think of Facebook (as a tool)?

Facebook is good as long as you manage your list. I added everyone and anyone when I started and was overwhelmed by the number of people I couldn’t care less about – and the fact that they had access to my info.
It resulted in a mass deletion (hundreds of people got turfed). Some feelings got hurt as people found out if they were really my friends.
I use Facebook strictly to network.
If I didn’t need to network, I probably wouldn’t use it (so much)
I do like re-connecting with old friends, though.
I hate to say “I told you so!”… wait, no I don’t. Told you so! =P
I avoided it for a long long time – now totally sucked in.
(And scurrying off to send you a friend request!)
Ok, I couldn’t sift through to find you. But I’m in there if you want to friend me.
