The temptations of road trips in the Greater Vancouver area

I was reading a comment left by Tyler Ingram on Rebecca’s blog answering my comment on the fact that I have never been to Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows. I have driven past Langley (well, actually I saw Superman Returns in Langley), been to Surrey a handful of times, definitely know my way around New Westminster, have had dinner in Delta and Ladner. But I have really never gone east of Port Coquitlam. Lots of people ask me “what is the temptation to do that, anyways… there’s *nothing* to do in Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows”. But the truth of the matter is that I’m tempted to just take a day off and go explore one or both of these cities. Not sure what I’ll find, but I’m just tempted to do it. Anyone want to join? Or, for that matter, anyone want to just have lunch at some point in one of the other Metro Vancouver cities, just ’cause? Drop me a comment, send me an email or “tweet” me at @hummingbird604 :) (ok, I admit it, I’m fascinated by Twitter right now – will have a chance to discuss it later). Anyhow, bottom line — I’m looking for someone to join on a Metro Vancouver roadtrip, bottom line … and since I don’t have a car, it will probably be by transit.

Hi! Pitt Meadows has 4 golf courses, a race track (think it’s private), a bunch of dike networks you can walk/run/ride horses on, 2 boat launches, a canoe rental place and of course it’s where Pitt Lake is located (the largest fresh water tidal lake in the world!)

Oh did I mention they have Rooster Country cabaret? lol Yea that’s right one (if not the) most popular country bar in the Metro Vancouver area. lol

As for maple ridge hrmm. Home of GoldenEars Provincal Park (camping, boating, hiking etc), bowling, paintball, dikes again, horses, hiking, umm I’m sure there are other things to go there. They do have Tommy’s Bar and Caddyshack Show Lounge.

just had an idea reading both your post and the comment above. Maybe we should BOWL our way across metrovancouver. I’m the world’s lousiest bowler, but am ok with that. We could find a bowling alley in each city and play a game in each one – make a day of it. Or an evening, one bowling alley per month.

ps I know that’s a really weird idea. that’s kinda the point.

It’s not a bad idea.

Maple Ridge has a REVs.
Burnaby has a REVs.
Port Moody has an alley
There is one on the corner of SW Marine and Fraser in Vancouver
One on Commercial Drive.

I’m sure there are a bunch others :)

It would be like John Chow’s Dot Com Pho he holds each week in Richmond.

Hey Raul, a while back Metroblogging did a series on some cities outside of Vancouver that might be worth checking out, Maktaaq’s write up was about Maple Ridge – mine of course was about Surrey.

If you’re up for a Sunday Drive type of thing I suggest we (yes we because I’d like to go with you on one of your mini-road trips and know the Lower Mainland like that back of my hand) head out through Surrey to Langley, through Walnut Grove (maybe stopping to stretch our legs at Derby Reach park) then on to Fort Langley, drive around the Fort and check out the view, then take the Albion Ferry across the Fraser River over to Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Mission etc. :-)

Hey Rebecca,

I’m totally up for a Sunday Drive! We should totally do it!

As for bowling, that also sounds *really* cool.

On the John Chow’s Weekly Pho – would you guys believe I’ve *never* had Pho? In 12 years in Vancouver, I’ve never had Pho.

onyxdragunApril 11th, 2008 at 4:48 pm

I’ve never had Pho either. I should go next time they have it. I do occasional work for Stephen Fung on Futurelooks so that could be my in ;) lol

Too bad I wont be in Pitt meadows when you guys drive by! I’ll be downtown for the weekend.

We are not sure yet when we’ll head out, onyxdragun, but we’ll keep everyone posted!

MaktaaqApril 13th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

There’s a great fishing hole my family used to go to in Pitt Meadows. I think I can find my way back there, if I could join this excursion next month….

RaulApril 13th, 2008 at 8:46 pm

Absolutely, Maktaaq, we’d love it if you joined us!

[...] Rebecca kindly invited me to join her through her tour (and live-blog) of Metro Vancouver celebrating National Digital Media Day (September 25th, 2008) which is tomorrow. We’ll be liveblogging and visiting several municipalities along the way. I really value these kinds of “day trips”, and it’s actually the realization of something we had talked about a long while ago – going on a Metro-Vancouver-wide day trip. [...]
