Upcoming events – Peace Girl Fundraising – Thursday Apr 10, 2008
The Justice and Reconciliation project (headed by Dr. Erin Baines) is organizing a fundraiser for the Peace Girl grassroots project in Uganda. From their website:
Peace Girl emerged as an idea after many years of working with former child soldiers and survivors of sexual and gender-based violence in Uganda and Rwanda. It is an offshoot of the Justice and Reconciliation Project, northern Uganda, a joint research initiative of Gulu District NGO Forum and the Liu Institute for Global Issues at the University of British Columbia.
Despite the fact that we have much more knowledge about the plight of girls and young women in conflict zones, and despite the fact that global policies have advanced significantly over the past decade, their situation is grave. We want to break from traditional approaches that views girls and women as victims in these circumstances and stop and listen to what they have to tell us about their survival. We seek to learn from survivors and introduce their stories to audiences who are also willing to listen. [Peace Girl Project website]
