Building neighbourhood communal libraries and reading rooms
A comment by Michael Kwan on my blog the other day when I mentioned that I had donated many boxes of my books, both in Mexico and in Canada to libraries of my choosing, made me reflect on the need to build neighbourhood communal libraries. Well, it appears someone in Vancouver already did this. My friend Tara Robertson pointed me out to someone who had done exactly that. Check her photo below. Hopefully more people can take this up on (hey Vancouver Foundation, why not fund with your Small Neighbourhood Grants a program to build Community Reading Rooms, perhaps with weatherproof sheds where people can sit down and read throughout a neighbourhood?). I still have hundreds of books in Vancouver I could donate for purposes like this.

I thought it was a unique (and brilliant) idea worth sharing. I think that it also prove useful in building relationships between neighbours.

I have seen this idea in different communities, and even in a condo building, but this one looks so pretty and original. Unique. Great way to building neighborhoods.
There is a community book exchange box in my neighbourhood, at the corner of Lakewood and Charles. I love it; I browse the books every time I walk past to see if anything intrigues me. I also bring books to drop off at the box when I am ready to give them away. Sometimes I pick up books, read them, and then take them back to the box when I’m done. The book exchange box is great, but communal libraries and reading rooms would be even more useful for building community in urban spaces. It’s a wonderful idea.
