There are some people in your life that you don’t need to be physically in touch with all the time to feel close to them. One of them is my dear friend Mana Mansour, the host of Shaw Multicultural Channel. Mana will be hosting this coming Sunday May 27th, 2012 the 14th Annual “A World of Smiles” Telethon in Support of BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

BC’s South Asian community is a long-time supporter of BC Children’s Hospital, raising awareness and funds for more than a decade. Throughout the year, community members show their support for child health care by organizing and donating at radiothons, dances, dinners, walk-a-thons, and other fundraising initiatives.

The generosity of the community is celebrated on the A World of Smiles telethon each spring.

Toni & Guy Fashion Event Feb 5th for Beauty Night

Mark your calendars – Tony & Guy (one of Vancouver’s most recognized hair salons) will be celebrating their anniversary on February 5th, and it will be a fully charitable event with 100% of the proceeds going to Beauty Night. Furthermore, ticket holders will receive a bag of products valued at $ 35. I’m really happy that Toni & Guy are supporting Beauty Night, as it is a really awesome charity! The event will take place at a Vancouver landmark – The Penthouse.

Please help: Warm clothing for the homeless in Metro Vancouver

I would hope that anybody who had read the horrible news about a homeless woman who died burned while trying to keep warm in an unusually cold climate that has afflicted the Metro Vancouver region will feel at least touched enough to try and help.

I had a Twitter conversation about the topic and how I was appalled that so much support had been thrown (millions of dollars) towards rebuilding Stanley Park and yet, the challenge of homelessness is still ways away from being solved. Many (the vast majority) of my Twitter friends agreed with me. I would like to use this opportunity and build some momentum to encourage you all to donate items (blankets, winter jackets, etc.) to help people in need on the streets.

BTW – homeless people aren’t only based in the Downtown East Side. I live in Mount Pleasant and I’ve seen people who need a warm place to sleep and/or warm clothing everywhere in this neighbourhood, even in Kitsilano!

Anything you can do can help. I found an article in The Georgia Straight and on Stephen Rees’ blog that talk about what you can do. Please help. Every bit is important.

Donations can be made to Gather and Give, a non-profit charity that provides a centralized inventory for organizations working with those in need. It is open Tuesday-Saturday, and is located at 105-418 East Kent Avenue South—just east of Main and south of Southwest Marine Drive. www.gatherandgive.org

Have brunch for charity! AIDS Benedict brunch weekend

Vancouver’s 3rd Annual AIDS Benedict brunch weekend is happening this weekend (November 29th and 30th). Participating restaurants include the following (I would have done all the linking but I’m exhausted and have a ton of work to do). Hat tips to Raincoaster who informed me of this event.

I am a very big supporter of HIV/AIDS-related charities (as I demonstrated by doing a 24 hour Blogathon in 2007 to raise funds for A Loving Spoonful). Now I’d like to draw your attention to another charitable event: The AIDS Benedict brunch weekend.

YouthCO AIDS Society and Camp Moomba, two non-profit organizations that support and empower children and youth impacted by HIV and AIDS, have teamed up for Vancouver’s 3rd Annual AIDS Benedict brunch weekend. Collectively sponsored by local restaurants, this “eggsellent” event blends scrumptious eggs benedict with public education to help raise awareness about children and youth in BC impacted by HIV and AIDS.

Donations from participating restaurants will give children and youth impacted by HIV and AIDS access to year-long programs and supports that they might not otherwise have access to. Participation in the two-day eggs-travaganza is eggstremely simple: fill your belly with eggs benedict or other promotional items at one (or more!) of the participating establishments on November 29th and November 30th.
